I never read the Introduction to a book. It just seems risky, like something will be spoiled.

What about you guys?

I've developed the autistic habit of reading every part of nearly every book. Introductions, forwards, appendixes—everything. It's more time consuming, obviously, but I feel like I've learned a lot more than I would have otherwise.

This. Then re-read the intro before you re-read the book at some point in the future.

Most of the time it's just something along of the lines of "This guy did some important shit and I really like his work so I'm writing a brief opinion piece/maybe 1-page biography on the guy so you can understand the context of his work better".

should we stick with 20th shin-hanga or go more primitive to the 19th/18th century ukiyo-e?

i read them for academic texts and just kept the habit up for fiction. it's interesting and i can tell when something is an opinion or not (thanks art history).

oh oops
one book which is a great mixture of both ukiyo-e and shin hanga is "ukiyo-e, art of the Japanese print" by fred harris

if you can get them, definitely buy the collected works of yoshida hiroshi and kawase hasui, although they are rare (I have to use the library to find them)
yoshida travelled all over the world so his prints are not always Japanese
