G: Oh, yeah. I have one girl, cute as anything, short skirts, the works. She comes to my office regularly.

To this the English major replies "lel no my degree is better than yours."

Sixty years later they both die, independently, having wasted their short, sad lives bickering over the value of their respective educations. Their respective flesh rots away in stone covered holes in the earth, and one hundred years later nobody remembers either names. Perhaps one name or the other was remembered for a greater chunk of that period, but in the end the result is the same.

People who shitpost about what someone else chose to study either largely never went to University/College, or just never grew up. Zizek jokes!

THERE IS AN OLD JEWISH JOKE, loved by Derrida, about a group of Jews in a synagogue
publicly admitting their nullity in the eyes of God. First, a rabbi stands up and says: “O God, I know I
am worthless. I am nothing!” After he has finished, a rich businessman stands up and says, beating
himself on the chest: “O God, I am also worthless, obsessed with material wealth. I am nothing!”
After this spectacle, a poor ordinary Jew also stands up and also proclaims: “O God, I am nothing.”
The rich businessman kicks the rabbi and whispers in his ear with scorn: “What insolence! Who is
that guy who dares to claim that he is nothing too!

IN AN OLD YUGOSLAV JOKE mocking police corruption, a policeman returns home unexpectedly
and finds his wife naked in their marital bed, obviously hot and excited. Suspecting that he surprised
her with a lover, he starts to look around the room for a hidden man. The wife goes pale when he
leans down to look under the bed; but after some brief whispering, the husband rises with a satisfied,
smug smile and says “Sorry, my love, false alarm. There is no one under the bed!,” while his hand is
holding tightly a couple of high denomination banknotes.

THE HEGELIAN SUBJECT emerges precisely by way of the reflective, self-relating, reapplication
of a logical operator, as in the worn-out joke about the cannibal who ate the last cannibal in the tribe.

"Cousin, let us go bowling!" he is saying.
Nickolai is of normal says no, he is busy of making petty crimes, but today he is saying "Yes, let us go bowling".
Two cousins walk to the bowling alley and go inside, but is shock! Politburo office! Officiat of politburo is there and so is soldier, they are telling Romanov to sit down.
Officiat speaks, "Romanov, you cousin was caught making petty crime of panty theive, in exchange for no go gulag he makes informant about you."
Nickolai speaks, "Romanov, you have much energy to go bowling all the time, and you is very fat man, how is this in Latvia?!"
Romanov makes cry, "Nikolai, cousin! How you do this, I am big of bones, not fat, I love you and want spend time together because lonely!"
"Lies!" Exclaims soldier, he lunges forward and thrusts his bayonet into Romanovs stomach! Bayonet is attached to large stick, kalashnikov having been traded to Estonian tourist for potato.
Romanov clutches stomach! He falls to ground! His tunic spills open but no comrades guts are fall out, instead, a bounty of potatoes!
Romanov cries, and Officiat speaks, "Nickolai tell us that you conceal potatoes in tunic, no share with village, no report to politburo, is major crime comrade, much worse than panty sniff!" Nickolai blush.

Give Latvian man potato and he nourish for a month.
Teach Latvian man to grow potato and politburo come, make rapings, burn crops and send to Siberia

Man and woman sit close on bench to protect from cold. Woman ask "what you like more, me or potato?" Man answer "you". Woman not believe and ask why. Man say "because potato just dream. You not." But is no man. Woman hallucinate from malnourish and die. Happy day for struggle is over.

Three Latvian are brag about sons. “My son is soldier. He have rape as many women as want,” say first Latvian. “Zo?” second say, “My son is farmer. He have all potato he want!” Third Latvian wait long time, then say, “My son is die at birth. For him, struggle is over.” “Wow! You are win us,” say others. But all are feel sad.

Latvian man come home and is see wife naked with other man. Latvian man weep and demand who is man ? Wife say "Who you are talk about ? Is no man here. You are hallucinate from malnourish." Latvian man laugh. Meanwhile naked man begin crawl to door but is freeze before can finish sneak out. In morning Latvian man find corpse and use for make breakfast. Wife begin set table. Latvian man say "What you are doing? Is no food here. You are hallucinate from malnourish." All food eat by Latvian man as wife sob. Gentlemans, you are take lesson ?

I heard legend of place with many potato. I went on long boat ride to search for magical potato land. I rode on horses - three of them, two die - to Riga. I avoid many soldier on way to shipyard. I sneak on rickety boat and hide under canvas sheet. Also under dead dog.

Boat travels slowly for many days, and I have many sicks. Sicks mostly bile because of no food (except dog). But then - boat stop! I wait until is very quiet, and sneak off boat.

What I see is beautiful land. Green grass and green hills. Things Latvian only dream of. There are animals that look like clouds with legs! Can you imagine? I follow these animals to farmhouse. I knock on door. Old man open.

“I am from Latvia. I heard legend of land with many potato. I come to find potato for family to live,” I tell him.

He answer in very strange language I do not understand. It sound like English, but also like old man is gargle. I ask him repeat.

“T’ere aren’t any p’tatoes on t’is fair isle n’more. ‘aven’t yeh heard t’ere’s a famine here in Ireland?”

I walk back to dock and cry. I hide under dog and canvas and cry. I come back to Riga, still cry. I get home, out of tears. Also out of potato.

I know saying this is to take that pic even slightly seriously (which shouldn't be done), but if anything Epistemology is the analytics domain, Heidegger even tries not to use the word 'knowledge'; the problems of Solipsism and brain in a vat and all that shit come from starting 2 steps to late in the present-at-hand. Ofc Heidegger doesn't constitute all continental philosophy, but all analytic philosophy has the problem of "cannot know nuffin" whereas a lot of continental doesn't.

God dammit /lit/ I'm just trying to laugh. Though I shouldn't have mentioned AP.

If you adhere to Materialistic-Empiricism, as contemporary science does, but current technology isn't advanced enough to find evidence or hasn't discovered the right equations yet (perhaps because we don't treat i as ontological reality, as with infinity, zero, etc - given the empirical/materialist approach to understanding reality), then what is "pseudoscience bullshit" today might be experimentally measurable in the far future. Yet because we irrationally take Absence of Evidence as Evidence of Absence (irrationally because the absence of evidence may just be due to our technological infancy (we were riding horses 150 years ago), mathematical illiteracy, faulty method of attaining information (materialistic-Empiricism, if it's wrong, could be to blame) etc) then we don't even entertain the notion that it can be possible, and so have condemned such subjects to anathema, e.i the occult (literally meaning "the hidden" or "the shroud"). So in regards to contemporary science, you're right, it is psuedoscience. But given all that I've said, that's not derogatory in this case as the fault is with contemporary science and scientific thinking, not the subject itself. I, anon, can vouch for its existence, but until it's experimentally (which may never be satisfactorily possible due to its qualia-nature/subject nature as opposed to the object/material nature of science, or may simply take a long time to be viable) measurable there's literally no way, unless we're both supremely mathematically literate, to prove its existence. By that regard, I can't defend against your claim, but hopefully my deeper understanding of the subject will nudge you towards at least entertaining its possibility instead of outright declaring it hocus pocus. After all, some of the greatest minds have been secret occultists. Even the father of modern science, albeit to a small degree, was one.

It is, mentally, in a sense. By virtue of being independant/unconscious of your body anyway. It differs because you're picking up new information from your environment somehow. That environment could be physical/material or it could be "mental". A "mental environment" is an "astral plane". It's not dreaming by virtue of the fact that the plane exists independently of your mind. If a regular dream is a self-contained personal dream then an astral plane (or, if you wanna get extra crazy, our normal physical reality by extension) is simply a collective dream. The regular dream being "unvivid" (in the sense that regular waking reality or astral planes are), and without an objective sense of time/cause because it's not externally dependent on anything other than our own imagination/degree of consciousness. I've deliberately removed any of my personal judgement on the matter and have only given the the hard and generally accepted deductions over the matter.

I suppose it may be different for others, but in my experience, a standard dream would be fragmented and wild, the dream directing the action with myself as a passive observer even when I am performing actions or moving manually. Most of the time I would not realize I was dreaming until I woke up.
There are times I become aware I am dreaming and think to myself in my own voice while observing the dream, and then very rarely I can control the nature of the entire universe of the dream after becoming self aware.
It is possible to enter into the self-aware, self-directing dreamstate deliberately by following certain practices.

It's not a matter of pseudoscience or science. It's a thing that exists and it works.

Honestly there's two reasons why this doesn't work.

The first is because few American colleges have actually rigorous literature programs. The college model for a lot of places nowadays is just a meat grinder where they give you the bare minimum and try to pull that sweet, sweet government subsidized loan money from you. Most people graduating don't know shit about lit and there's a lot of them being put out every day. So the ones who are actually talented won't get picked out. They drown among the tards.

Second, it'd be really fucking hard to get a family in America to care about English enough to spend the money to have their kids schooled in it. Chances are, the parents that both have the money for a tutor AND care enough about literature to do so are probably in humanities themselves, and could do just a good of a job for free.

People are afraid their kids will want to major in literature. They know it's a dead end. You'd have to find a parent that is VERY convinced their kid has some sort of talent for it. And they really won't. They want their kids to do STEM because it's safer. But honestly, at the rate we're going, that won't be true for long either.

Good post. Mainly, though, it's just that nobody with money cares enough.

In Roman times, the rich were born rich, and remained rich simply out of the faculty of being rich.

In America, this is true to a far lesser extent. Those who achieve richness probably did so through a real-world oriented education (most likely a STEM or business degree). And those who were born rich have lived all their social circles where being well-read isn't a necessary prerequisite to appearing cultured.

The man finished the book. He closed the pages tightly together then put one foot on the floor then the other then used his hands to push himself up out of the chair and then put one foot in front of the other until he had walked all the way to the book shelf and then put the book on the book shelf. The deer walked in. The man whirled around and fired once with his pistol and the brains of the deer went flying out the back of its head and painted the wall a color dark red like blood. The man sat down again like a man sitting down.

I didn't really like the book, said the dead deer.

I reckon I was pretty conflicted, replied the man grimly.

His writing style is pretty problematic.

I reckon his style is perty silly, he just strings a bunch of them declarative statements together, like 'the man did this then the man did that etc", but they don't paint no picture, they're done totally unevocative of anything. I reckon it don't take no skill to just state in excessive detail what someone is doing. It takes artistic skill to say it in a way that done bring it to life for the reader, and he don't done really do that. I reckon it's some sub-Hemingway shit he's doing.

It's not all bad though.

I reckon some some of the images t'were pretty powerful.

And the judge is a memorable character.

>> No.5355299

I reckon he's the only one though. All the rest of them there charac'ers ain't real memorable, like he done put no effort into 'em 'cause he spent all his time on the judge. And that there whole novel was all...whatdjacallit, structureless and stuff. And real repetitiv' too.

I read that he doesn't see why people like Proust and James because he thinks all novels should be about life and death things.

I reckon that's 'cause he's too obsessed with subject matter and not enough with style and art.

The dead deer nodded and walked out. The man slowly got up again by putting one foot then the other on the floor and then used his hands to push himself up out of the chair. He fixed himself a drink and resolved not to take anymore book recommendations from Harold Bloom.

That's what it is. I AP most nights, and consider myself somewhat experienced in the art. AP is the act of vividly constructing a setting and placing oneself in the dream environment. It's somewhat like an OBE combined with a lucid dream. It's a very entertaining experience.
