Writing Basics:

>Description
What is happening. What a character does. Sight, Sound, Touch, Taste, Smell. What a character thinks and feels.

>Transitional sentences/paragraphs.
Passive voice to move from one 'scene' to another whilst maintaining a narrative flow.

>Point of View
First, second and third person. Or third-limited.

How much am I missing? I'm trying to make a list of possible ways to approach writing fiction. I'm doing this because I want to narrow down what my options are so I can work within them.

Don't be so formal

>> No.5300260

If you need such a formal guideline and can't figure out intuitively how to write, you are most likely too autistic for writing.

You might be right. But that's not going to stop me.

if you approach writing like this i promise you will not write anything good

Are there examples of writing which defy the options in the OP?

I hate when writers describe things. I have imagination, i dont care what u think it looks like, unless its important to the story.

Oh cool so you proved my point. If you don't stick to the OP options you end up writing drivel.

Not really mate. That was complete senseless drivel written for the sake of being obscure.

>>5300313
>not understanding a good author will choose to describe only the key interesting details.

In fact rich detail leaves a lot to the imagination. Take Harry Potter for example, simplified writing but a rich, understandable world loved by hundreds of millions of people because they all share an equal understanding of the world.

>Voice
Can the writing be read aloud and not sound ridiculous? If it's third person, what kind of 'person' does the narrator sound like?

I think this is the most important part of the puzzle for a lot of /lit/'s young wordsmiths. Just so much unreadable purple prose from people trying to sound smart rather than tell a story.

Gonna have to agree with this. It's ok to describe things if there's a reason, but it better fit in later on. Rule #1 of writing: If you could cross a sentence out and nothing else in the story would be hurt by it, then cross it out.

"no" that is a very reductionist and poor way to look at writing as a medium. If you are looking for plot driven works, then that is fine, but that it is an awful rule to apply to all of writing. I dont care how good your imagination is, you are not going to create late 19th century Amsterdam in your head like Nescio creates it with his lush descriptions.

>implying "period" fiction isn't the absolue bottom of the slime at the bottom of the barrel
If someone's describing 19th c Amsterdam in that much detail, they've probably never been to 19th c Amsterdam so it's just the dude's random-ass opinion (yes, this includes historians). If the author actually is from 19th c Amsterdam, and is good enough that he hasn't been utterly forgotten by now, then he will apply >>5300398

Nope, YOU won't make it. Because you don't get it. Stay at the shallow end for a while before diving into the deep end.
