Girls only!

What have you been reading lately? Are you enjoying it?

What do you hope to read?

I am reading the Tale of Genji at the moment and I am enjoying it, even though the early chapters are entirely Genji's escapades with women.

Am I the only one that felt really bad about the whole ordeal with Genji's mother? I mean, shit... usually books don't throw in feels that early.

I just finished Stoner and liked it. If I were to relate it to female matters, then I'd say that I found it represented the crazy wife in a balanced way, and I was surprised by the number of female characters.

At the moment, I'm reading The Little Prince in French and English, accompanied with a French audiobook reading. After that, I might read Crime and Punishment, or Lolita.

Just finished Portrait of the Artist etcetc, didn't care for it that much tbh. Liked Dubliners waaay more.
30 pages into Love in the Time of Cholera, liking it a lot so far!
If I can finish Cholera quick enough I'll try to make Mason & Dixon my Big Book to close summer off, otherwise I worry uni work will get in the way of me finishing it.

Aww, do you speak French well now? Maybe a revisit is necessary. It's a very cute book—I loved the conversation he had with the flower, as he left on his interplanetary adventure.

The book I most recently finished was The Isis Papers by Dr. Frances Cress Welsing. I wouldn't recommend it if race makes you uncomfortable, or if you don't think it exists.

The book I'm reading now? The Black Count. It's about the man who apparently Napoleon was SUPER jealous of, to the point where Napoleon basically ruins the guys life. The Black Count's son went on to write The Count of Monte Cristo and Three Musketeers etc, all inspired by his father's badass life.
It's a good story so far, but as it is based on history that is well known, it is hard to be happy knowing the character will get fucked over.

Yeah, I live in French Canada, so speaking French well is pretty essential. I do still reread it every once in a while, because it is a top-tier kids book :3

Fair nuff, don't blame u what with the trip
I've never run into any trouble with being an anglo. It's actually very possible to go through a whole day without speaking any French if you're in anglo circles (two solitudes and whatnot). That said, at least some basic French is very useful in general - bus drivers are almost universally francophone, for example. You'll never really be harassed or anything for imperfect French or speaking English, although that can be possible in the more rednecky smalltown Quebec.

Biking in Montreal is pretty great & easy, some rly nice scenic bike paths. They've really been ramping up urban bike lanes in recent years too. Definitely way better than anywhere in Ontario/Prairies.

Depends where you're staying, really. My personal favourites are Encore Records/Books and Odyssey Books.

If you're moving downtown, there are a bunch near UQAM (Sanguinet & Ste. Catherine and thereabouts), a lot of which have student discounts.

As far as I know, though, there's no one definitive hotspot a la The Strand or whatnot. Most of them are at least p good, so just scope around for ones near where you're at I suppose.

the word is probably the best in downtown

the guys who run the place are pretty standoffish (tho understandable since its so patronised by students), but the selection of like dollar books they have outside are sometimes really good and well thought out

paragraphe is also OK. if you go to McGill you'll probably have to get some textbooks there. they invite authors to give readings every now and then

now I really miss Montreal tho Toronto probably has better bookstores

as for what I'm reading, just finished Houellebecq's Atomized and halfway thru Catch-22

I don't really mind; I'm not much of a talker so I don't really care if the staff aren't chit-chatty.

As for the topic, I'm reading The Stone Angel and will read Breakfast of Champions next.
