An argument against it though, Shakespeare just might have been a competent enough writer to have shown the hatred start through what he would very likely make an unfortunate sequence of tragic events centered around love where no one is truly wrong and misinformation is abound. It could have just been that he didn't find it appropriate for the play, while having thought about it himself.

The family hatred is somewhat incidental, it`s just an obstacle that serves as a plot device. Anything complicated enough to create a sequence of tragic events would be complicated enough that some of the audience would inevitably think the Capulets were completely in the right, and some others would think the Montagues were completely in the right.

Surely, It's a combination of the two. If they fighting started within the timeline of the play, then no one would believe that each family could have so quickly developed a deep hatred for each other, in addition to the fact that play is titled Romeo and Juliet, not Montague and Capulet. The feud is merely the background challenging the lovers. They themselves think the fighting is ridiculous, and it would merely add unnecessary lines if they were to start discussing the actual event that led up to the feuding.
