Good characters are acceptable. Good characters winning and/or not suffering is unrealistic.

>generic english class
>get in argument about the hunger games
(interjecting here to make it clear that i didn't initiate this and hate bringing it up because it's the most useless battle ever to denounce kid books and it's petty as hell, but nonetheless my opinion was forcibly dragged out)
>it becomes an argument about the difficulty of classics v. the shallowness of genre fiction / young adult / bullshit
>teacher gives impromptu assignment
>I and others in the class who mostly read from "the canon" are assigned to read and discuss something recommended by the people arguing in favor of the teen business
>They have to read something I recommend
>Immediately give them The Metamorphosis

>later
>wondering how correct I am to present something so self-hating as The Metamorphosis that it's practically a suicide note without the suicide as the superior theme
>realizing i've been denouncing stories with special, empowered individuals as protagonists
>am I really doing them any favors by saying "this is how it's done"?

I doubt they'll see the situation like I do, but still.
