The only way to win a cat's affection is to tend to her: feed her, change her litter, brush her and play with her. Oh yes, and PLEASE only post thread germane to literature, though I suppose cats and literature go together swimmingly.

Also, if you save a cat from a shelter, she will know; there will always be a special bond between the two of you.

Besides, cat owners deserve cats. If they can't make the commitment to bro-tier animal like a dog then that's their own fault.

what's good about having pets is the feeling of having something totally reliant on you. any domesticated animal is equal in regards to that. domestic cats might act cool but they all die in the dirt just as easily as a stray dog when they're left to their own devices.
Cats are preferable because they are *quiet*. There's no greater feeling than having a cat rub up against your leg. There's no great sound than the soft miaow at your door when she wants fed.
Dogs are great too for *fun*, enthusiastic exhausting fun. but their fur is thick and oily and smells bad a lot of the time. Dogs are fun and loveable while cats just soothing to watch. it's more passive and relaxing like bird watching. rewarding but in a different way from being licked in the face or jumped on by an intrusive pup.
Both are wonderful and I'm glad they exist but for different reasons. they don't hold the same qualities. That's what makes them special to me. So I would hate it if they were both judged on the same criteria.

i've owned cats and dogs. i don't think it's entirely fair to take cats as simply conniving bastards who only get away with it because they're cute. Cats can be affectionate but it depends on the breed and individual animal. yes historically they have been used less as a pets and more as a utility on farms for curbing rodent populations. Perhaps that has something to do with their unsympathetic demeanour. but I honestly i think *demure* is just in their nature. a dog will bound across a field, leap in the river or stick its nose in a beehive with any consideration. they seem naturally curious. whereas cats are just that bit more withdrawn and cautious.

Cats are superiors.

Dogs are loyal, will follow you till death and will probably accept everything you do. What a pity.

Cats are independants and funny. They love you if you threat them in the right way. They can easily replace humans by other cats if they're bored.

Dogs are for attention whores and emo who whine if their animals doesn't love you. It's just the reflect of a incredible primitive ego. Obtaining the love and the respect of a cat is a true reward.

cats have lots of uses, its just not the same as dogs.

in fact too often dogs are adopted instrumentally. they're used to keep their owner healthy or overtly to bring happiness to a family.

whereas with cats they're accepted as being their own little creatures unto themselves. Like humans are. no one uses humans. most moral systems value them inherently.
that's not to say cats don't have a use value. it's just drawn out incidentally. watching them can have a calming effect.
Much of the way we treat our cats could do with being introduced in our relationship to dogs.

>Much of the way we treat our cats could do with being introduced in our relationship to dogs.

I've got a cat and a dog, and I suspect if I treated my dog the same way as the cat, there would be problems. People don't like it when you put a bull-terrier out for the night and tell her to go find her own dinner.

Incdentally, my dog is also like a little individual, but she's just a bit more "special" and needs more direct instruction than the cat. On the whole, I have a closer relationship with the mutt, she's more like my friend.

She's also absolutely crazy about blonde women, and is always really cute when they're around. My dog has got me laid a lot more often than my cat, who tends to sit around licking where his balls used to be and coughing up hairballs whenever I bring a woman home.

So you think the best relationship with a dog is to sit and look at her, and to gain quiet pleasure from having the beast around?

That doesn't sound much like fun to me when we could be running around outside, going to bars, wrasslin' on the beach or escorting ladies back to their place because "it's dangerous to go alone".

Also, a dog wants to be "used" - they're happiest when they have a role, and a fixed position in the hierarchy. My dog get's sad if I don't make her carry some of the groceries from the store.

Cats don't want to hang out with anyone except their young and maybe another cat so they can fuck it. They are creatures without a social instinct unlike dogs, dolphins, or monkeys. Their aloofness is not aloofness, it is a complete and total lack of social understanding. You don't have to work harder for their affection because they don't have any to give. Any sort of connection you may forge with it will be based on your ability to provide for it food and furniture to ruin. Once you are unable to provide for them, they're out. Still though, pet owners impress their human way of going about things and understand the cat's nature as simply being complex or deep or aloof. It doesn't make them shitty animals, it's just their nature, they didn't evolve, or have yet to evolve, the ability to cooperate with other cats (or any other animals) and to understand social situations. I could see someone wanting one as sort of a pseudo-pet, something that hangs around the house and isn't too loud and doesn't require attention. It's a step-up, in terms of the owner's involvement, from a fish for sure.

I have an Anatolian Shepherd and a Great Pyrenees for guarding horses. Since they've been bred to be left along to guard flocks of whatever they are very independent. They won't necessarily do what you want them to do.
I live in a rural area and these are great dogs to have. Very territorial. Any potential burglar is going to regret it.

I also have a cat. She knows she's cooler than me and is doing me a favour letting me hang out with her.

Dogs suck.

I grew up with 6 all at the same time. They're obnoxious and they smell bad.

And what's this about cats not being bro tier pets? My oldest cat would follow me on hikes and horseback rides. I'd go off into the woods for hours and she'd be with me the whole time. She's with me right now, sitting on my lap.

no but too often families expect to get a dog as a play mate like a toy, not actually respecting it as an animal. they run it ragged and that's when they develop bone and muscle problems in their later years. especially since you're most prone to expect too much of your dog when it's a cute puppy and thats dangerous because they're still developing at that time

Happens with all pets, dude. I worked in an animal shelter for a while, and we saw dozens of cats who'd been traumatised by kids throwing them around the house like teddy bears.

The problem's not the animal - it's the attitude of owners who think their pet is a part of their property/lifestyle choice.

in fact cats are far more often taken in "instrumentally", because people want them as an ornament in their apartment, instead of a companion animal.
