His analysis of Lacan is absolutely terrible. He tries to split desire into these weird sub categories of yearning and craving in order to sidestep certain aspects of Lacan that he doesn’t want to deal with. The writers he’s referencing are obviously heavily theoretically indebted to Lacan and yet in his section on the fantasy he completely misses the mark of what the fantasy accomplishes for the psyche for Lacan. The fantasy is merely the mirage of the symbolic but inverted for the subject. Where the big other stands over the symbolic as it’s master and main address of all symbolisms the subject likewise does the same to the fantasy. As a result, the subject suffers the same pains which the big other suffers from the symbolic. I.e the subject is made into a blank space by the fantastic by its association with the ideal ego and the subject is an ‘effect of structure’ of the fantasy. (The subject qua subject must be determined by a route which takes a detour through the fantasy in order to be legible. I.e you know who you are because you’ve assembled a little narrative about yourself and not just by some pure intuition of self.) This however is never discussed and it’s implications are ignored in the analysis. In fact, I find that an analysis that takes these into account really runs counter to the whole “sex is like cool and women are like repressed and need to have more sex yaaaasssss” narrative he’s going for. When you take into consideration that the act of fantasy is constitutive of the subject and not the other way around media like twilight and other romance (porn) novels really are a dangerous thing inasmuch as they offer a ready made form for the fantasy to assimilate. Which is really just a Lacanian way of saying that reading a lot of porn turns you into a coomer which should be pretty obvious in current year +8. It’s a very disingenuous argument which is essentially “what bro, you don’t like your daughter reading porn bro? It’s like, the human condition or something man.” The whole point of Lacan’s clinical practice was to try to get the patient to ‘pass through the fantasy’ to see that it was only fantasy. Without doing due justice to the weight of the symbolic and the big other in this analysis it misses the mark and ultimately the radicality of Lacanianism itself as a kind of semiotic evolution on Freud. I can’t speak to the rest of it as I nearly died laughing at a comment somewhere around the hour thirty mark where he said something like ‘I don’t think, as a society, we’ve come far in terms of women’s oppression since the 70s’ and turned it off. I've never watched this book troon before. I've only seen the philosophy troon that supposedly ripped her off. I have to say, its really amazing how similar is their content.
