I'm interested in reading some of Reggie Oliver's works, but I have no idea where to start.
Pic related is featured in the horror chart and weird stories chart (the horror story collections has Masques of Satan), but he's written a lot of collections that all seem to get a lot of praise.
Can someone help me out and tell me what the best works or best order of reading would be?

>> No.22787603

I've only read Flowers of the Sea and The Complete Symphonies of Adolf Hitler. Both good books. He's not exactly a horror writer, but he does veer into the uncanny. He's a lot closer to a Robert Aickman than, say, a Clive Barker.

Ah, nice to know. I've heard that his style is a bit like M.R. James.

Never heard of any of this but based on the titles and cover art alone I'm intrigued.

I like him quite a bit, closest writer I'd compare him to would be M. R. James, though he often gets a bit more macabre and surreal. Perfect mix of cozy and creepy for autumn.
There's not really a "reading order" since he mostly just does short stories. I'd say to just pick up one of the Tartarus Press collection or pirate an ebook and try him out, they're all very even in their quality.

Thanks, that helps me out! Are there any collection/s that are your favourite/s?

I've only read pic rel, but I think it's great. Kind of a "best of", so a good starting point. Similar to a lot of great brittish horror writers like M.R. James, Aickman, Ramsey Campbell, Mark Samuels and Terry Lamsley.

Op here. I was looking at The Sea of Blood, to see where the stories originally come from, and this is what I found (in order):

>The Dreams of Cardinal Vittorini: 2 stories
Beside the Shrill Sea
The Dreams of Cardinal Vittorini

>The Complete Symphonies of Adolf Hitler: 7 stories
The Blue Room
Bloody Bill
Among the Tombs
The Skins
The Time of Blood
The Constant Rake
Lapland Nights

>Masques of Satan: 3 stories
Puss-Cat
Mr. Poo Poo
The Old Silence

>Original stories: 2, which both got reprinted in The Ballet of Dr Caligari
A Donkey at the Mysteries
Baskerville's Midgets

>Mrs Midnight: 2 stories
Mrs. Midnight
Minos or Rhadamanthus

>Flowers of the Sea: 2 stories
Flowers of the Sea
Come into My Parlour

>Holidays from Hell: 5 stories
Holiday from Hell
The Druid's Rest
Absalom
The Rooms Are High
Trouble At Botathan

Are Complete Symphonies and Holidays from Hell seen as having a higher quality, because their stories are heavily featured in comparison to the other collections?
I might be reading too much into it, but the difference between 2 stories and 7 stories featured seems like a very deliberate choice.

The sea of blood was published before Holidays from hell, so those storys were likely included because they were uncollected at the time to market TSOB to those who already owned his previous collections.

Thanks, I missed that HFH was printed after TSOB. Surprising to see that he split up his original stories, and later reprint the two earlier ones in one collection and the later five in another.

Flowers of the Sea, mostly because the titular story is my personal favorite of his. Really sent a chill through me with the ending.

In a similar vein, I too had been perusing the horror chart which I think OP is referring to, and I found this little disgusting pamphlet. It was marked on the chart as especially hard to find so when I saw there was a copy on BookDepository (RIP) I jumped on it. The author's life was incredibly depraved and as far as I know the stories contained therein are pretty extreme. I only read the first story though, because I bought it more as a novelty. Maybe next October I'll read it. OP's book sounds just as tantalizing though.

Reggie Oliver is on the Horror Fiction chart. The chart you're referring to is the Dark and Disturbing Literature chart, which I actually made! (pic related)
I haven't read The Eyes myself (I've only read a few books on that chart, and mostly relied on research and experiences and opinions of others to create that chart), but it's very nice you've managed to find a physical copy!
