Because the same applies to words. Any word that gains some popularity online just becomes a watered down catch-all umbrella term for what it once meant. One example that comes to mind off the top of my head is "trolling". I'm pretty sure it used to mean that someone would be pretending to hold an opinion they don't to get a reaction out of people for entertainment and also implied the person was subtle about it. Now it's just a vague term for someone who is being mean to you or holds an opinion you don't like.
