Honestly culture. It made them wanderlust, but also homesickness. Nostalgia, but also science and accelerated progressivism. A heart, but also countless wars to challenge it. A fine language that enables scribing deep and convoluted thought, but also, well, that.
Germans have always been torn between these things and this constant conflict is what made them great thinkers in general.
