It's gotten to the point where I'll say "You know, I think there really is a God" in conversation when something good happens or I see something I like, and nobody knows I'm referencing this /lit/ shitpost. The other day I took a walk by a construction site where they were clearing some land for a new apartment complex and I saw a bulldozer and said the line out loud and one of the construction workers said "what?" and I repeated myself and pointed to the bulldozer and he went "Faggot." and walked off. This is a common misinterpretation in the English language. We can use the word ''one'' much as the word ''man'' is used in Deutsch. Unfortunately, this has been nearly completely discarded in modern usage of English. When one uses the word ''you'', it implies that whatever one is referencing is being directed in full at the recipient of the comment, and not that one is merely speaking abstractly about the topic at hand.

Women don't like the idea of incels because they believe that all men get pussy very easily and can do anything to clueless girls. Women believe that men who don't are anti-social and are so by choice, otherwise they would get the first girl from the social group. Anti-social men are dangerous, yes, but also too dangerous, not secure in their lives and unreliable because they don't have friends or close family. The incel is considered an actual danger to the woman instead of a perceived danger to other people.

My first inclination upon reading a few excerpts of Wilson's translation was that it was so bad that it was likely a tool to degrade Homer such that he would be easier to remove from the canon. Months later, she confirmed my suspicions when she appeared at a speaking engagement at which she agreed with another speaker that the canon should be abandoned to make way for newer, more ''diverse'' authorship.

Man of many ways is probably the best rendition of the word. I don't know that I like the rest of Lattimore's. He seems excellent at capturing the nuanced meaning of the Greek in some places, but somehow loses the overall poetry. Man of Many Ways is excellent, but I'm always annoyed when a translation begins with "tell me" or "muse". The first word is Andra. This is poetically important. The Odyssey is about humanity. When we begin it with the Muse, or with the petition, we make it about storytelling, not humanity.

>Emily Wilson, a professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania, notes that as late as the first decade of the 21st century, almost all of the most prominent translators of Greek and Roman literature had been men.[66] She calls her experience of translating Homer one of "intimate alienation."[66] Wilson writes that this has affected the popular conception of characters and events of the Odyssey,[67] inflecting the story with connotations not present in the original text: "For instance, in the scene where Telemachus oversees the hanging of the slaves who have been sleeping with the suitors, most translations introduce derogatory language ("sluts" or "whores") [...] The original Greek does not label these slaves with derogatory language."[67] In the original Greek, the word used is hai, the feminine article, equivalent to "those female people".[68]

>>22340601
I don't think its possible to maintain the poetry of an ancient greek text in english translation without sacrificing the actual meaning of the words. there are many older translations that have beautiful poetry and they rhyme too, but is it even the same poetry? the words are different, stretched to fit the beat and to rhyme and to sound good in english. The only way to experience it properly is to learn how to speak ancient greek.

You can quote as much of an article about her work as you want. It won't put the words back in her mouth. The irony is that she did not say much. The other speaker at the event did most of the talking. Since he was more ''diverse'' than she was, she deferred and let him speak for her, thus exercising her white privilege. At the end, she nodded and said something along the lines of ''I agree''. It reminds me a bit of when Protagoras agreed with Socrates.

>"yes but the MOST PROMINENT have been by men!"
Maybe because they were good? No wonder you eternally whining needy children never do or create anything interesting, you think prominence is something you are owed by existing. There are maybe 4 or 5 translations people consistently reference out of the massive amount that exist, and they're all notable for understandable reasons (Fitzgerald and Pope being great poets in their own right, Chapman being the most notably literal, etc.)

i was just copypasta wikipedia for the sake of expanding. i don't agree with the dumb bitch. She also claims to be the first female translator of the text, hypocritically erasing the memory of women.

as far as the 'female people' (lmao) who were slaves who fucked the suitors, being in the position of Hetaera or Pornai would have been better than to be a philandering slave girl acting without profession, the derogatory language would be completely accurate in the situation.

>And that's the thing. The devil is in the details. Are they white? No. The literature on that is quite clear. And you might say: "Are they circumcised?" Well, yes, by and large, most of the time, quite robustly. But then again, so are Muslims. And so are white Americans. Does that mean we discount circumcision as an indicator of tribe status? Well, maybe. But that's not the point. The point--and Carl Jung wrote about this--the point is that by the time you realize the importance of always checking the 'early life' section, you won't need to. This was the realization Jung made and it is a staggeringly brilliant observation. What he said was: once you understand the early life, you are beyond needing to know the early life. And that may sound like a paradox, and fair enough, but...

Wikipedia is an absolute joke. For the MLK Authorship Issues page, they indicate that he only lifted a few phrases here and there for his speeches and only admit to wholesale plagiarism in his scholastic papers. In fact, the bulk of the content of his ''Streetsweeper'' speech is lifted from Hitler's ''Streetsweeper'' speech, mostly varying from the original not in content, but in what was deleted from a longer, more well rounded story.

No. The MLK version is the equivalent of the Reader's Digest condensed version. He could have made any comparison that he wanted, but he made the exact same comparison as Hitler did, only omitting large sections. There is nothing of substance that is added to the original. Further, with the omissions, he abandons the original purpose of the speech. He puts himself squarely in the crosshairs to be judged as a fool that can only degenerate the previous work of others which was an accusation that the Germans were making against the US even before MLK's time.

That is a humorous post, but I hope the average /lit/ poster understands that Socratic irony, a rhetorical device, was used by Socrates to highlight the limitations of human knowledge and challenge people to examine their beliefs critically.

>Feign ignorance to engage in dialogue and expose contradictions or weaknesses in other people's arguments
>humble yourself by demonstrating that wisdom begins with recognizing our lack of knowledge
>Simultaneously illustrate the complexity and depth of your philosophical approach

Is there a better way to be open to questioning our beliefs in order to seek genuine understanding?

On a second read, most of it is actually reasonable, but the ridiculous part is that women aren't attracted to incels because are so "by choice". The fundamental problem is that it's something incels are incapable of getting. They are too powerless, unmotivated, underdeveloped, etc. to have success with girls. And the real kicker is when they don't think they are capable of growing to the level - a repellent lack of self-responsibility, ambition, and confidence.
Anon was right about them seeing it as easy, because the bar is really not that high if you have the proper sense of self.
