>ARGH!

I think he needs a novel that will engage him emotionally, make him cry, etc.

I had a gf who screamed one day because a character in Toni Morrison's Beloved died.
I want him to have a reaction like that.

I believe he needs that to become a reader.

Any books that will do that?
Also welcome other points of view, stories of how YOU became a reader, etc.

What is he interested in? Surely there must be something that interests him.
Also, define "classics". I hope you haven't suggested him to start reading with Crime and Punishment, right?

He is NOT your son, and you are NOT his dad. Try being the cool uncle with cool stories instead of trying to make him feel emotional about books, which is much harder and for some people impossible compared to simply enjoying reading.
Perhaps a few stories by O. Henry

Books that boys like to read would be stuff like My Side of the Mountain.

The fact that they liked some of the books you recommended means you're making progress so what are you frustrated about?

Find something else to worry about.

Men don’t have the same reactions to literature the way women do. Ask him what his interests are, look for books based on those interests. I grew up kind of like him but when I found something I was interested in, I was hooked.

Also, the kid might have a chip on his shoulder from the older sibling's reading habits.
Leave the kid alone.

Is there a book you would want him not to read, that you would try to stop him reading if you caught him reading it? I guarantee he'd be interested in reading it. Tell him not to read that book.

My bad.
I should have explained that my sister and her husband had been telling me abou this reluctance to read.
I majored in Lit so they wondered if I might have some ideas about how to get him interested in reading.

Sorry I gave the wrong impression, I def understand why you thought the way you did.
