I usually have at least one sex scene in everything I write. It's just such an interesting thing to explore with a more critical eye. It's really bizarre when you take a step back, that our psyches have developed such incredible complexity while our sexual urges and instincts are still, ostensibly, almost completely unchanged. Sex is an amazing opportunity to examine this kind of "layering" of the human brain — progressively higher and higher ordered functions overlaid upon the most basal and instinctive autonomy. I love sex scenes, just not for their erotic component.

If it fulfils a purpose relevant to the plot then I'm fine with it.
I was completely put off by the constant, jarring sex scenes in A Time of Changes by Robert Silverberg, but it kind of makes sense. It's a society that treats sex and nudity as an open commodity but love and affection are taboo and forbidden. The sex scenes are still cringeworthy but they make sense.
I was so grateful that McCarthy cut out any real sex scenes from All the Pretty Horses. I felt everything was leading up to it but it never happened - all that gets mentioned is them lying naked together, kissing and a moment where Alejandra bites the main character's hand during sex that goes undescribed.
I'm reading Dune Messiah right now and the amount of times Herbert mentions 'flesh' is plain creepy. I'm far from sensitive but I can't bear gratuitous GRRM-style descriptions of female characters in SF or fantasy.
Honestly, I don't know how I'd navigate fiction if I was still a virgin. It would make me feel incredibly alienated. I got into reading after losing my virginity and I'm thankful for that. I remember watching movies and feeling that way, but there's way more intimacy in reading a literary description of sex.
