It's permissible in Islam, there's a difference between something legally being allowed and whether it's preferable to do it etc.. Of course it varies from case to case.

The major companion Umar already cautioned against marrying cousins when he said (to a family that used to marry their cousins a lot

>“You have become frail, so marry intelligent people unrelated to you.”

Al-Shafi’i also said

>“Whenever the people of a household do not allow their women to marry men outside of their line, there will be fools among their children.”

And Al Ghazali also has an opinion that it's better not to marry your cousin if it's excessive within you bloodline etc.. among numerous other scholars. So yeah far more revered and influential individuals that Hamza Yusuf have already "had the balls" to say this throughout Islamic history.
