Why is it no one can read a poem without trying to dismantle it? They take wicked pleasure in ripping it apart when they think they're in a position to do so, and act with umbrage when their two-bit undesired opinions are shoved back in their faces. I often use poems by great poets to sniff these pesterers out, and it's amusing to see their illusion of critical sensibilities shattered.

Most people read poetry quietly to themselves without commenting or dismantling it. You only notice the people who do the opposite. This is something like availability bias.

I don’t know. I like to discuss poetry with friends to see if they are hearing the same things I am. I’m not a supersmart full time big brain litfag, so I like to compare my thoughts with others. It’s the same with dining out or going to see a concert or movie. There is a social aspect to enjoying culture. This doesn’t excuse dickish blowhards who hold themselves above everyone, if that’s what you’re getting at
