Just started the third book of Prince of Nothing series, and even though I enjoyed it in general, I just want it to be over at this point. How does the Aspect-Emperor compare to PoN? Also, does anyone have the wojack-political compass meme for Prince of Nothing, I remember seeing it months ago in a random thread in /tv/, and haven't been able to find it since

I'd like to read more SF/F short stories, aiming for 1 a day. I'd like to get as varied a mix of classics and new kino as I can. Any anthology recommendations?

Also, Asimov's magazine didn't have any stories that interested me despite it being "the" SF magazine. Any recs for genuinely good SF/F mags?

What are some enjoyable modern science fiction and fantasy books you've read? I've gone through most of the classics I was interested in, and need to start dipping into the more contemporary pools (which are filled with more crap than all before it). I recently finished The Lies of Locke Lamora , and thought it was good.

State of the Sanderson 2022 Excepts

My company grew sizably to match the demands I’m putting on them—most specifically editing, art directing, publicizing, and shipping 600,000 secret novels.

the majority of my fans prefer audiobooks these days.

The books will not be on Audible...Audible has grown to a place where it’s very bad for authors...they treat authors very poorly. Particularly indie authors. The deal Audible demands of them is unconscionable...the current industry standard for a digital product is to pay the creator 70% on a sale. It’s what Steam pays your average creator for a game sale, it’s what Amazon pays on ebooks, it’s what Apple pays for apps downloaded...Audible pays 40%. Almost half. For a frame of reference, most brick-and-mortar stores take around 50% on a retail product. Audible pays indie authors less than a bookstore does...if indie authors don’t agree to be exclusive to Audible, they get dropped from 40% to a measly 25%...This is shameful behavior...they are squeezing indie authors to death....I had one seller who really wanted to work with me, who will remain unnamed, who is consistently only able to pay authors 10% on a sale. For a digital product. It’s WILD.....I know it’s going to cost me a ton of sales—because right now, people tend to just buy on the platform they’re comfortable with. The Lost Metal preorders were 75% audio—almost all through Audible...I know many of my fans, probably hundreds of thousands of them, simply won’t buy the books because it’s super inconvenient to go somewhere else.

Stormlight Five is named Knights of Wind and Truth...doesn’t QUITE fit the format we wanted...I feel this is close enough to nod to that kind of inside easter egg

collaboration I did with Dan Wells in the Dark One universe sometime very soon. It’s called Dark One: Forgotten, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out. Rather than writing that one as a novel, it’s presented as a fake True Crime podcast that slowly uncovers a supernatural mystery; because of that, it’s an audio exclusive

Elantris/Warbreaker/Rithmatist
All will have to wait until Stormlight 5 is finished, I’m afraid. Stormlight’s my main focus now!

Night Brigade (Threnody novel). Dragonsteel (Hoid backstory series.) Silence Divine (Ashyn novel). Aether World series. Mythos series (new planet, though this is the off-world nickname right now).
We’ll see if/when any of these appear!

I can’t say much about Hollywood projects

Soulburner (a longstanding project on these lists) did eventually get made as a video game, named Moonbreaker.... wasn’t thrilled by the monetization methods they picked upon launch. (I got a little blindsided by this, I’ll admit.)

As for my (Dan Wells) Cosmere novels? We’re already working on the first one, but it’s mostly just brainstorming at this point. We’ve found a corner of the Cosmere—and of the fantasy market in general—that’s just begging for a series

Walter Moers' Zamonia novels are a joy, each in their own way. Very creative and unconventional world building, and all books have illustrations by the author himself. The first one came out in 1999.
Newer books by the author are more hit-and-miss, but that's not really a problem when reading the initial ones as they're all self contained, not an ongoing series.
The "main" works are The 13 1/2 Lives Of Captain Bluebear, Rumo's Miraculous Adventures, and The City Of Dreaming Books. Alchemaster's Apprentice and Ensel Und Krete (not sure if this one even has an English translation) I also recommend. imo they're Ideally read in the order they came out. Bluebear was the first, and some say a bit more aimed at a younger audience than what came later, but not in a way that's bothersome. It does perhaps the most world building out of all, it simply hasn't got much bloodspilling compared to Rumo, for example. Maybe some people would be better off read Dreaming Books and Rumo first. It's not like one spoilers the others.
If course the books, which all use language quite creatively and make new words, lose a little bit of their brilliance in translation, so those who can are well advised to read the German originals. Still, the English translation is serviceable and inconsistencies only noticeable to those familiar with the original text.
All in all, I highly recommend. You basically never see Moers in these threads and it's a damn shame.

I think the biggest and most consistent and widespread red flag in science fiction is the a priori assumption that any and all advanced extraterrestrial species will have utterly abandoned all serious conceptions of meaningful religion, with the exception of evil genocidal races that have some vague "Crusade" mentality that is used primarily as an excuse for the author to attack religion (not that the religion of these evil aliens is ever developed enough to be recognizable as any real-world faith).
It is so phenomenally rare to find non-human religion in SF media at all, that the infantilized, bowdlerized, and dumbed down superficial religions that are bland copies of extinct or exotically foreign (to a western audience) earth faiths (the Jedi and Klingons' Sto'vo'kor come to mind) are welcome reliefs from the vaguely socialist atheism that permeates SF near-universally.

The issue with this story is that (potentially) epic story is ruined by elements that make it very ordinary and very boring.
The parents should have never been given relevance, in a young mans journey into the world parents have no place, the village and his gf he left behind should have stayed behind and never mentioned again. The shitty vampire thing stinks of coomerism. His gf coming back will likely change the story from coming of age journey to some shitty couples drama.

Why not give the kid some more time to grow and string the reader along for the slow rise to greatness. Instead the stakes rise way too fast way too quickly, which is not at all comfy growth anymore. Worldwide cataclysm and divine interventions just feel way to out of place for a growing hero.

It is fun to have for a while, but if it drags on then it is super annoying.

Short fiction in practice is more hit or miss than novels because usually people don't just read whatever novel they see and have more discernment. It also depends a lot more on whether the premise is liked. I've read a few thousand works of short fiction and that's how it's been for me. This is my last response because this is brutal, and going nowhere. Let's take reasoning and logic. You say these are merely thought processes, but yet they can exist without you. The statement, "Years before you were alive you didn't exist" is perfectly logical, yet your thought process is wholly unnecessary for it to be true. This means there is an immaterial structure to things that precede you, and it goes far beyond the bounds of just logic.

With this in mind let's go back to faith. I've shown you here that logic can exist without the thought process. You say you believe logic exists, therefore, you believe in an immaterial thing that was here before you, and is outside of the senses. You can't prove that it exists, but you believe in it regardless, and thus, you sir, are engaging in an act of faith.

>This is my last response because this is brutal, and going nowhere. Let's take reasoning and logic. You say these are merely thought processes, but yet they can exist without you
Logic can exist without me, but it's a thought process, it needs a functioning brain of a person for it to exist.
Belief, reason, logic are all though processes, they cannot exist in thin air.

>The statement, "Years before you were alive you didn't exist" is perfectly logical, yet your thought process is wholly unnecessary for it to be true. This means there is an immaterial structure to things that precede you
Correct

>and it goes far beyond the bounds of just logic.
Incorrect. There are no such thing as bounds of logic (and therefore there is no area that is out of bounds of logic), there are levels of logic complexity, we are capable of some complex logic but there is even more complex logic that we aren't yet capable of. Logic can be applied to everything. Things like "god" require only rudimentary logic to apply to understand, and the understanding that we get after applying logic, is in one word it is a delusion.

>>21429548
>With this in mind let's go back to faith. I've shown you here that logic can exist without the thought process
No you haven't. If there was no life on earth, then there would be no logic, the planet would orbit around the star according to physical laws regardless if we existed or not.
If there were no people to explore and test those laws then there would be no logic because logic is a though process. If there were no people there would be no thoughts, no thought processes, no logic applied and no logic results obtained, therefore no logic would exist.

>You say you believe logic exists, therefore, you believe in an immaterial thing that was here before you,
Before me but not before the first intelligent human.

>and is outside of the senses. You can't prove that it exists, but you believe in it regardless
It's a thought process, the archeological records, the historical records show that people in the past even thousands of years ago were capable of thought and logic, they applied logic and obtained the results, which was then followed by scientific discoveries. That in itself is a proof that logic existed before I existed and could sense it.

>and thus, you sir, are engaging in an act of faith.
No, faith is not a thought process. It is not real and does not exist. What exists is people with damaged brains whos brains malfunction when they try to believe in something that should not result in a belief. It instead results in something that is neither a belief nor a disbelief, garbled information and thoughts that should be discarded or classed as false and irrelevant, yet they are instead kept and even prioritised over everything by many people. It's a delusion.

I want an enjoyable sci fi/fantasy story with a female protag who discovers she's a lesbian. I'd be very happy if you got into these books. They're great
Indeed all protagonists of these books are non-human (as mentioned at one point in Bluebear, following a historic incident humans are in fact banished from the entire continent of Zamonia): Rumo is of a species of tall humanoid dogs with deer horns characterized by excelling at physical combat, while Hildegard Mythmaker, the protagonist and fictional author of the City of Dreaming Books comes from a species of long-lived dinosaurs that dwell in a castle-mountain and write literature of all kinds (pic related, that's him)
Captain Bluebear is actually somewhat of a household name in Germany, as Moers first devised him as a character in children's television, who tells wild stories of his seafaring days to his grandchildren. With the 13 1/2 Lives Moers sort of reclaimed the character for himself and gave him an entirely different angle and a rich backstory. About the only connection is in the books foreword, which calls to mind the opening image of the cartoons with his ship sitting on top of a tall cliff when he writes:
People often ask me what it was like in the old days. My answer: In the old days there was a lot more of everything. Yes, there used to be mysterious islands, kingdoms and whole continents that no longer exist. They lie beneath the waves of the eternal ocean, for the waters are slowly but inexorably rising higher and higher, and one day our planet will be entirely submerged. That is why I now live in a seaworthy ship perched on a cliff high above sea level.

Funny to see Walter Moers recommended here. I absolutely adored captain Bluebear as a kid, when I got older I read the rest of his works and was absolutely blown away. His world building is definitely the best part of every book, wacky creatures, strange lands. It feels like you're getting a peak into an ongoing world that continues after you close the book.
