Depends on the Gnostic philosophy in question. For myself, I studied a scientific discipline. The dualist separation of matter, which we see, feel, and are made of is different from energy. I know these both exist, as it's a scientific fact, and the Gnostic separation of the spiritual and firmament seems to closely parallel this. Personally, I find Gnosticism to be compatible with the observable universe, though I'd disagree with the angle that the material world is inherently sinful.

In every situation, to be specific, due to the law of conservation of energy (not Einstein's equivalence equation). There is a tendency in modern physics to focus on information rather than matter or energy because it is in a way more fundamental than both and underlies them both. You could also look at wave-particle duality in quantum mechanics, where waves (energy) and particles are literally the same thing in different states. What this means is that energy and mass are not specifically the same, but they states or modes of the same thing.

You realize wave-particle duality can be explained as a standing wave, right? Like if you tied a piece of string to a pole and made waves with the other end by holding it, you'd be doing the same thing that a particle (i.e. photon) does on a smaller scale. In that case, the string itself is a contained wave, but acts as a particle.
