Nature is only considered as something worth living for in times were your every need is readily provisioned and you no longer need to be connected to the body of men to find yourself feed, clothed and with money in your pocket. Someone who leaves their airconditioned home on the weekend and drives to the national park for a hike can tell themselves that nature is beautiful and everything else is ugly, but that is because they are so far above nature and so utterly unconnected with it that it is nothing but a pretty vista to them- their interactions are purely superficial, they are nothing more than a visitor to an art gallery.

What you are looking for is Hermetic Internal Alchemy. Its literally Gnosticism but with the idea of the demiurge being something we need to escape to being something we need to transmute out relationship towards. One of the basic tenants of the Hermetic cosmology is that turning away from the demiurge is turning away from light and life (because that is what it is made from / embodies) and internal alchemy is the practice of turning toward it instead (read symbolically of course. though practice does help to make the symbolic teaching more concrete in the individual psyche, like the ritual aspect of mysticism).

>And to this world, to this scene of tormented and agonised beings, who only continue to exist by devouring each other, in which, therefore, every ravenous beast is the living grave of thousands of others, and its self-maintenance is a chain of painful deaths; and in which the capacity for feeling pain increases with knowledge, and therefore reaches its highest degree in man, a degree which is the higher the more intelligent the man is; to this world it has been sought to apply the system of optimism, and demonstrate to us that it is the best of all possible worlds. The absurdity is glaring.

try living there for two months, not as a weekend escapade from city living, but truly live there for two months. without a cozy cabin, without clothes, without water purifiers and protein hiking bars. you will quickly realise it's not as beautiful as you claim. sure, it might beat wageslaving, or you might find a better experience than in the city, but suffering permeates every corner and burrough of that "ideal" landscape. the forest looks nice from afar but the moment you try to cross branches will rip through your skin. every living thing in that place is just bound by endless excess, each trying to consume and claim the totality of all biomass. you're nothing but an enemy to them, just more potentiality to devour and transform. it looks good, but it's certainly not perfection.

>Mysticism is not essentially Christian. I would even say that in its final form it is more anti-Christian. I know that this will cause pain and anger in some circles. Yet when I look at the Bible I find hardly any examples of mystics. Paul alludes to his own experience; he knew a man who was lifted up to the seventh heaven, and he could not say whether this was with or without the body. But he was not intentionally seeking union with God. he did not engage in a movement of ascent. He was caught up or taken up by an external force like the chariot of fire that catches up Elijah or the hand of God that lifts up Daniel. nothing more. We find prophets in the old testament and apostles in the new. In the enumeration of spiritual gifts there is no mention of mystical gifts. We are told to imitate Jesus Christ but not to achieve union with God by a mystical ascent. When the apostles are invested with spiritual power, it is by tongues of flame that come down from heaven. There is no question of union with God. Jesus alone is in total union with God. such union is brought about by the fact that God comes (down) to us, not by our spiritual intensity or psychological action or by any attempt to climb up to him. The idea of a possible union with God is ruled out by the revelation of cherubim guarding against any return to Paradise. As I have often said, there is no possible ascent to God, or access to him. But this is what mystics passionately seek. They want union with God. They have discipline. They follow a path to the inner void where the soul is filled by the holy spirit and access opens up to God. This is the exact opposite of what the Bible teaches. The antithesis is even more radical if one accepts the common etymology whereby “mystic” comes from muein, to be mute or speechless. How can this be when God’s work is wholly that of the Word? God himself speaks, and he calls upon us to bear witness by the Word. There could hardly be a greater contradiction. In fact all mystical experiences are ineffable, and Paul is totally against anything of this kind. If we follow Jesus, it is not a matter of looking up to heaven (“Why do you look up to heaven?” etc.) but of being on earth and concretely living out the will of God that was done in Jesus Christ.

There is generally only one demiurge for the gnostics. Also, the view of the demiurge depends on which gnostic group you mean. The most well known group were the Valentinians, who associated the demiurge with the Yahweh of the old testament, and the one true perfect God as the one who sent Jesus.

Most people simply can't handle the rather bored affair that is objective reality. Most people remain infantile their entire lives. They desire above all else to view the world in a totalistic/impassioned/them-centered manner. All that people like the Gnostics do is craft an elaborate and completely baseless story about the world that just so happens to place themselves as significant actors. The actual story of the world consists of bland physical interactions, and there is absolutely nothing special about you. You are just as novel and meaningful as another combination of interactions in the Universe. People like to believe that Gnosticism is greater than other religious and spiritual doctrines because it replaces unwarranted optimism with unwarranted pessimism, but all they are ultimately doing is committing to a different side of the childish and primitive way of viewing existence.

What's the point in living if you're just following predetermined motions like a TV show you already know the ending to?

It depends. Some animal's existence are pure Hell, from one point to the other. Urban foxes are a good example. Life expectancy of 1 1/2~2 years (in nature they usually reach 6-7), which they spend in an environment similar to being in the trenches in WWI, not a single autopsy of urban foxe in London ever showed up a fox without multiple fractures on some if not all of its legs.
But for one, these lives are usually much shorter than ours. I can't think of a single animal with a comparable lifespan to ours that could be conceptualized to be suffering constantly.
For two, it seems undeniable that Man can show both more sensibility and more stoicism toward the events which are sources of suffering, and toward suffering itself. Man can be crushed by something ridiculous like bad grades and jump of the school roof, or he can run under gunfire and artillery shelling to go grab some kid he doesn't even know because that's just what a Man does.
The difference expresses that only Man can truly act, that only him is capable of actual action, and not mere adaptation to the environment. The moral core of Humanity is irreducible and yes, it involves a certain sensibility to suffering that animals cannot by principle have.
We have a special relationship to suffering which other animals do not. I don't think its fair to say that we suffer more than them, or less than them, we do it differently. Their lack of free-will and representational capacities forces them into a role of perpetual victims of suffering, while ours forces us in the uneasy role of judge, jury and executioner.

After taking him to the Vet after he stopped eating we were told one of his organs was failing and to bring him after the weekend on Monday to put him to sleep. I suppose the idea was to give him a few days to see if he'd start eating again or something.
Naturally come Sunday night, we leave him in his favorite bed in his favorite spot before going to sleep. We wake up and he's no one to be found, he had slipped out the back gate and we never found him again. Naturally we were all racked with sadness and guilt. The biggest cause of my sister's suffering was naturally the image in her mind that the dog was out in a bush in the cold night, whimpering in pain and mental anguish that his family had abandoned him in his final moments. While there is the other perspective that the dog's natural instincts took over, realized his death was near, and to separate himself from the pack as a matter of "natural duty".
I don't know maybe he just became delirious, went out to use the bathroom, got lost and was hit by a car or picked up by someone. Unlikely given our location. Anyways it has me thinking a lot about the way animals perceive reality. I wonder if there any good books around this subject. I miss my dog a lot anons, hopefully he's up there in Heaven stealing cat food.

That’s basically what Plotinus believed ironically. One of his problems was that Gnostics believed that Jesus was going to help them out, and if Jesus really is God and really was going to help them after they died, how could he be stopped? Therefore it’s better to just kill yourself. Plotinus is also far more pessimistic than the Gnostics, because they believed that the world was created and would eventually end, while Plotinus believed it would continue forever.

>hopefully he's up there in Heaven stealing cat food.
He is, anon, he is.
He knew his end was coming. Death unites us all, humans and beasts, but we do not relate in the same way to it. He felt it more natural to seek a lonely spot where his remains could not bring more suffering to those he loved. In comparison dying in a vet's office would be horror, and your presence would be but a slight comfort.

Man is just a carnivorous ape. Man has lust for violence because all carnivorous apes without lust for violence were Darwin'd. Ultimately man is beholden to same laws of nature as everything else, which ultimately boil down to basic laws of physics such as energy conservation or entropy. Anyone having complaints about violence should be complaining to whoever was setting these laws to work like they do in our reality.

Whoever made that image is a moron, and so are you.

The principles of nature are limited to, and the facets of nature terminate in, theological primacy —in this consists ordered evil—; the stranded biospirit becomes syntheotically accordiated via the protektion of the strong logosmind, culminating in theological ultimacy —in this consists ordered good—; however, this does not, nor should it, preclude the due benevolent influence of bios through one's symbiosis with nature.

The gnostic regards the world, as a whole, as an excape, not as a hellscape, and knows that one cannot escape it, but may convert oneself through it, transcending it by performing one's alloted repatching of its scape, thus adding one's rendition of it to one's rational texture, and virtuous architexture —one's inscape.

Nature was meaningful to them because they had a meaningful connection to it for their very existence that Homo domi, "work from home man," has lost. More than that, you are looking at cave art like it's a Romantic landscape portrait. Did its artist want to inspire his viewers with the power and splendor of the auroch or the wild horse? Or was he praying for a successful hunt that would see his people fed? Impossible to tell, though one seems to me more likely than the other when you only see the animals that they hunted or overcome, not the mountain peaks, the dark forest, the crashing waves. You take the assumption that man has always held the same sterilised view of nature as a beautiful vista to be surveyed by his Olympian eye, a pretty picture.
