I'm halfway through Song of Kali and really like it so far. The writer really delivers a picture of a desperate hellhole city and the story so far is creepy.

I decided to actually read some lovecraft recently. read the tomb and loved it, and call of cthulhu and quite liked it aside from some descriptions towards the end taking me out of it.
then I got sidetracked and read the great god pan. it was a bit rough, especially because machen seems almost allergic to paragraphs, but god damn did it hook me. I couldn't put that thing down and I needed to see how it'd end
I'm currently reading the wendigo by blackwood, but after this I'll probably go to dunwich horror. it's been quite nice jumping around a bit

I really enjoyed Legion, it's sorta sequel.

It's as close as I've read to a book like the movie Se7en, but it can be a little long and lumbering. Nothing comes together until about 2/3 in and it resolves itself really quickly.

Less sinister than the Exorcist, but if you like his style check it out.

The things you mentioned are neat, I agree.
Thing is though that I hated how self-pitying Jack is, (the fact that he is Stephen Kings' self insert doesn't help it either) while he is obviously a piece of shit it is constantly hammered home that he is actually the coolest guy and the coolest teacher and the coolest dad.
I didn't like that the story wants to have it both ways, either he is a nice guy and gets corrupted by the Overlook or he is a piece of shit and the Overlook just pushes him over the edge.
The movie took the latter approach and it worked, while in the book Jack is an even bigger psychopath initially but turns out to be an angel in the eyes of everyone by the end regardless.
I haven't read any other King novels yet, but I plan to buy a collection of his short stories soon since I did love the disturbing moments a lot and hope that the shorter format keeps him from self-indulging too much.

[For anyone else reading, spoilers for The Shining ahead]

I just finished the book, and I don't really think that what you say is true.
Jack is not really shown as a good dad or a good teacher; he breaks his son's arm, he has very obvious anger issues that make him threatening and unreliable, on top of his addiction that makes him even worse. The only thing that makes it look like he's a good dad is because Danny is a daddy's boy, just like how Jack was to his dad (and his dad was an obviously terrible person to everyone except Jack, who just happened to be his favourite).
At school Jack is very lousy as well: he teaches while being hangover or still being drunk 90% of the time when he teaches in the morning, the other teachers hate and avoid him (except for Al, and that's just because they are drinking buddies and are both alcoholics).
The only positive aspects of his career as a teacher is his debate club (which he fucks up in the end) and his small writing career, which isn't even directly a teacher thing since he's writing on the side, and his 'fame' was only like one story that got featured in a big magazine or something similar.

Jack is a complex character: he is trying his best to be a good person, but he is heavily struggling with addiction, he has very serious anger issues without any way to talk about it or improve himself (other than just telling himself not to lose his temper), when he should obviously get therapy (which he doesn't get because he's the man and he can fix everything himself, he doesn't talk about his feelings or problems at all. The first time he actually talks about his problems in all those years is when the three of them go to the doctor to see if there's anything wrong with Danny.) He has closed off his emotions to such an extreme degree that he has only said "I love you" to his wife less than 10 times in his whole life.

He is trying really hard to do the right thing and be a good person, but he just doesn't know how. That's how the Hotel manages to get to him: his biggest weaknesses are his addiction, his anger issues, his money problems, and the love for his father, who was an abusive, alcoholic, violent asshole, and the Hotel uses all those mental problems/weaknesses to make him believe he should kill Danny.

Wendy and Danny know Jack is being corrupted by the Hotel, and they both love him despite his faults, problems and struggles. Wendy had been thinking about divorce for a long time, but going to this Hotel might be the solution to get everything back on track and create the perfect family. At first, everything is actually going better, but the Hotel brings out the absolute worst in Jack, and at some point it is so extreme that it is obvious to Wendy and Danny that Jack is gone and it's just the Hotel now. They don't see Jack as an angel, but they see him as a person who doesn't deserve to get turned into a mindless murder monster by the Hotel.

Time for Night Shift now!

>they're not scary at all

Pet Sematary was enjoyable from start to finish and a great read. But it at best got mildly creepy, and only on the last couple of pages. It didn't really allow itself to build atmosphere imo. And even if it started it often broke them with jokes, self referential remarks or narration breaking the build-up.

Salem's Lot was pretty dull and felt like watching a schlocky B-movie. Not only wasn't it scary but I found it almost comical at times.

Next on the agenda are IT and Skeleton Crew, but now I wonder if King is the right author for me and I'm not just wasting time.
What books have scared /hfg/ shitless?

Only horror unread before was Lovecraft, which Ioved(mostly due to world building tho) and the first two Ring novels, which scared the shit out of me as a teenager, but on later revisit, did absolutely nothing.

I'd suggest trying Ligotti, or John Langan's The Fisherman. Both are really good at creating creepy atmospheres, and The Fisherman is pretty lovecraftian at times

Everything you have said is absolutely correct.
Nevertheless, the actual storytelling wasn't as objective as you were right now. While reading the novel it's more inline of.
>Here are the awful things Jack has done
>but it wasn't HIS fault.... if he had just had a drink, or the guy he did something awful to wasn't asking for it....
>God I hate myself I'm a piece of shit (this is Stephen King talking to himself btw)
And this went on in a loop during the events of the narrative. I just hated the self-pitying while sort of kind of justifying his actions.
That being said I did enjoy him being an asshole (the scene of him taunting Ulman on the phone while smugly chewing on Excedrin especially) and the scenes of psychological terror were fun too, it's just that I have such a huge lack of empathy towards Jack's suffering and couldn't stand him being portrayed in a decent light.
Obviously my Kubrick bias is at hand here, plus my personal distaste of alcohol, but I really do think that this story reads like a self-help book for Stephen King.
>Time for Night Shift now!
That's my pick for short story collections as well, will pick it up after going through Lord of The Rings.
If that doesn't make me like him I will probably give him one last chance with The Tommyknockers, which Stephen King hates and therefore I should like lol.

Also as someone who has no fucking clue on this subject I wanted to ask:
What are your thoughts on his prose? I would love to finally be able to "get" prose but I just don't as of now.

IT has both the best and worst of King. It’s way too long with lots of half-baked ideas but it’s also really creative and interesting. If you don’t like IT then you’ll pretty much know he’s not for you.

If you liked Lovecraft I’d go to his contemporaries. Algernon Blackwood, Clark Ashton-Smith, and Robert E. Howard all wrote amazing horror. For more modern stuff, Ligotti is king.
