As if there were only US books on the site. The US isn't the center of the world and not everybody conspires against them. Of course there were plenty of books from russian authors too. A couple of months ago I downloaded a whole children book series (from various russian authors) from there, that was pretty popular in the easter bloc back in the day, since my sister wanted to read them again. It is some alternate take on the Wizard of Oz... but just with so much more sequels (and another prequel). 17 books or 18 counting the prequel and some movie adaptations too.

I've downloaded some stupid urban fantasy series on zlib for fun. It actually was pretty good, so I talked about it online. At least four other people bought the whole series, meaning the author sold six books (and more from the follow up series the others got interested in) four times, because I downloaded her books on a whim. Pre apple-music and Spotify when people on /mu/ had massive share threads and torrenting, or even Limewire/Kazaa were popular, record stores were everywhere. Now you can listen to near unlimited music for the price of a coffee per week, physical media like CD’s (at like $10-20/album) is a bad deal compared to unlimited streaming.

Likewise, Piracy did not kill used book stores. Amazon same day delivery killed used book stores. Kindle Unlimited killed used book stores. The vast vast majority of readers only buy new books in the top 50 for the year, and mostly buy YA.
