Cause and effect is not used religiously by historians and anthropologist because they don't rely solely on historical sources anymore. Spengler was a step in the right direction for historiography, but he goes completely off the rails by presenting a unified metaphyical notion of history. That is a single monophonic narrative, because the man relied solely on history sources and philosophy, and he does not dislose any hermeneutic method besides the metaphysical symbols of his own categorization.

During Spenglers time the authorial problem of history was huge, nowadays historians start out small and make self-contained claims about history because connecting them with huge strands of historical meta-narratives is just either too hard or devolves into ideological shitflinging. 1.Carolina López-Ruiz - "When the Gods Were Born, Greek Cosmogonies"

2. Brian Hayden - "The Power of Ritual in Prehistory Secret Societies and Origins of Social Complexity"

3. Roger Beck - "The Religion of the Mithras Cult in the Roman Empire, Mysteries of the Unconquered Sun"

These are basically history/anthropology books that get out of the Huizinga, Dumezil, Irwin Thompson type of anthropology/ history even though they are indebted to them .
