Hello Newfag, welcome to /lit/ and /sffg/.

Chances are that you‘re heard the name Bakker thorn around this place quite a lot. Fear not, this is what you need to know.

First off, I would generally advise against reading him early on, especially if you're new to reading and just migrated from /v/ looking for a Dark Souls type of adventure. Read other, lighter, stuff first. There is plenty, just don‘t fall into the web-novel meme. Those are atrocious, especially Reverend Insanity, Cradle and the Wandering Inn. You should also know that a lot of people here suffer from PBS(Post Bakker Syndrome). Meaning that once you've read him, it will be hard to find other authors in fantasy as good as he is. Which is why Bakker memes are so prolific here.

Having that said, he is quite literally the most beloved writer in this general, and has been for over a decade, regardless of what filtered (Yes, some people here are unable to truly understand his prose) anons might tell you. And he is, in my humble opinion, the greatest living writer in fantasy right now.

If you enjoy dark fantasy series with intense battles, pitch black lore, highly intellectual themes that dovetail into real world philosophy, poignant character psychology, and just a hint of Lovecraftian horror, then R. Scott Bakker is the author for you. When the time comes, start with The Darkness that Comes Before from the Prince of Nothing trilogy.

Three men sit at separate tables but all close to one another at an inn that stands on a tall hill, the inn is lit with candle light and smells of tobacco.
The strongest of the men dressed in high quality monk robes in a drunken haze stands up abruptly and thrusts his glass of ale into the misty air around them. "Bakker, he is the one true supreme king of this land" he proclaims loudly before looking at the other two men, showing a subtle smile of supreme supremacy that rules over them for just a moment.
"outrageous claim!" the second man answers and pulls up his hurdy gurdy from beneath the table and begins singing a song about the video streaming adventures of Rothfuss the bearded and how he is the one true supreme ruler.
After the song has ended the third man, an educated scholar and world hopper who has travelled far from the lands of Westeros finally speaks "George R. R. Martin has been prophesied to rule not only over these lands but the entire Cosmere which we live in, every book speaks of his return from his journey of becoming the supreme autarch".
The mist in the inn grew thicker, the men calmed down and sat silently, each deep in thought on how they should prove their creators supremacy.
Finally the waitress of the inn, a magical innkeeper enters their room ready to offer them more drinks, she had no limit on how much she fed and gave them to drink or smoke, she had a fetish to overfeed. Before she could explain her intentions the scholar points at her and asks her calmly "missy, who is the one and only ruler of these lands, the supreme king of the cosmere?" looking at the other two men with one eye brow raised "I think we can all agree such a wondrous beauty and Aes Sedai can answer for us" looking back at the innkeeper focusing on her name tag "could you not? Miss, Erin?".
Erin looked at the men before folding her arms (under her breasts of course) and showing them all a smug smile. "Why of course I can, for there is only one man who truly rules supreme as a king of these lands, and that is the author of Breach of Peace Mr Daniel B. Greene. Now would anybody care for some more ale?".
That night all men suffered from alcohol poisoning and Daniel Greene ruled supreme for all eternity with Sanderson in a dress by his side as his queen.

Does anyone have the archive link to that last ultimate colossal collection of science fiction and fantasy books?
Do you guys ever feel like putting in the effort into a different author/book series is kinda daunting, especially if the book ends up not being enjoyable?
It's interesting how it's easier to read something that's established(like, Halo or Warhammer or Lord of the Rings) versus a completely unknown series to you.

Rhythm of War, The Stormlight Archive #4 - Brandon Sanderson (2020)

Rhythm of War is ok. Its greatest weakness to me isn't its length, but how it chooses to spend its narrative. None of the plotlines were engaging or interesting and a lot of it really felt like completely drawn out filler. When a certain event happened, I thought to myself, "Oh, so they're going to do cat and mouse scenes for the next several hundreds of pages" and so it was. There was so much that felt like it happened because it was required for the plot to advance in a certain way rather than as organic progression. It's quite probable that it was all intentional to build up towards catharsis, so that after reading it for so long, there's a sense of release. I don't know if that was intentional with the first book, but it felt like that this book was built around that rather than it being a natural part of the story's structure. Personally, I would prefer if it were more evenly distributed. I have no doubt that the next book will solidify a lot of what I think about The Stormlight Archive.

Maybe in the next book the characters will have new developmental arcs, but I'm not not expecting it. Kaladin especially with his relapses, but I suppose that's to be expected with his condition. Then there's Shallan's Past of Many Happenings, which I'm assuming in next book will all come together and provide some needed power increase at a critical moment. I think the narrative overly emphasizes in a reductive way that the greatest insights come from the darkest times. There's been a lot more about the Parshendi than I would've expected from the first book and I don't care for it. If it were done better, then I think it would be a worthwhile inclusion, but as it is, it's a not particularly meaningful mirror. I know that Sanderson has had a Semitic naming scheme for certain characters, which I still don't understand his intention, but he really has fully committed to it with this latest addition. It confuses me in relation to their Earthen counterparts. Is it a coincidence that combining their name with another results in Superman's name? Probably.

I've seen a lot of about how this book includes more and more and more stuff from the other Cosmere series, but aside from the epigraphs and a few trivial other details, I think that's an overstatement. Most of what's presented was already introduced in previous books. I don't really see that changing with the fifth and final book of this arc either. Maybe there'll be more integration with the second arc, because as it is I still don't see the Cosmere as much more than a marketing scheme. I don't know if there will ever be a full crossover. Also, Easter Eggs are overrated. I think far too many become excessively agitated about how much they believe that they're missing out on, or even feel coerced into reading more than they want to in pursuit of a mostly illusory full experience.

How come nobody here ever talks about Walter Moers' Zamonia novels? They're so damn great. Very creative fantasy. And they're illustrated by the author himself ontop of that. Especially the 3 main/biggest/best ones pictured here. Ideally read them in order from left to right, chronologically as like they came out. I can't recommend them enough and it saddens me that there's never been a movie or series adaption (although perhaps in the current times it's for the better).
>>2089384
I think they should be easy enough for you. An English translation exists and it is good, but in my opinion it doesn't quite reach the full greatness of the original. Something is always lost in translation, I guess. In this case especially names of things, people, places sometimes got english-ified i.e. became a little more dull. You wouldn't notice it if you haven't read the german original first.
Also, at least in the pirated epub of the English release I downloaded from libgen, the pictures are very low resolution and a lot of the creative formatting and fonts, which do add to the experience, aren't there.

getting uncontrollably angry, name calling and hateful at a book and an author for having written a book for people to read is more "soulless" from my perspective.
In modern times kids usually have far stronger souls than adults, they don't force themselves to read or watch a show they don't like because why would they? They're watching for entertainment. People with lesser souls who obsessively mimic others in media consumption for entertainment are the ones with lesser souls. They can't control themselves, they need to be "in on it" and get extremely angry when they don't get to be "in on it" because they didn't enjoy the book. A kid with a soul who hasn't been completely brainwashed yet just stops reading the book and goes playing with legos or finds a different book.
So with your comment and letting me think about why it was wrong I think I came to the answer to my question.

You can translate English easily into Romance Languages and vice-versa, but with German you are forced to do a lot of "gymnastics" more often than not. You've arrived there way faster than I thought. As you are almost at the end, how was Volume 7 for you? Assassin run, Saliss chapters etc. What did you think about the (in)famous scene with Flos and Rasea's ship?

As for the 7.61 stuff... When Pirateaba was writing the chapter, near the end he shut down the stream and told the chat his internet shut down and he's going to finish it offline. It was a lie, of course.

The final stretch of Volume 7 is fucking wild, big stuff happening, stuff beyond your comprehension. I personally liked this outcome, it was foreshadowed in the story a lot with Erin doing batshit crazy stuff and almost dying, never wearing protective artifacts...the bill had come due. Not it's the time for reaping.

You can't just say millions of years passed and then not tell us in even a shitty, unsatisfying blurb. What the fuck was the Chmp doing to the crew at the end? Why did it blast Liam and the other dude? What in the nigger fuck happens after that fucking singular was wrecking the ship? He ends the God damn book with it tearing the ship up. What the hell was that in the end where {someone} was talking some other AI? Where did they go? When did that happen? How?

If nothing else, give me a fucking book with some fucking answers at the end. That's twice I had to read about a cool anomaly and he goes "lol make up your own mind."
Fuck. Off. You wrote all of that. Finish it. I guarantee the authors come up with answers before discarding them.

I can't say I've read every story within it, but for the most part, no, obviously not. Canterbury Tales is solid on the history part, but there's no Arthur in it. Le Morte d'Arthur is strong on Arthur, but by an Author who was himself writing a fantasy tale with little desire for realism. It's good Medieval Fantasy, I'm not criticizing it, I'm saying that there is a sub-genre of fantasy that is also deeply invested in creating a fully fledged simulacra of the medieval society the story takes place in. That isn't what the writers in the Matter of Britain cared about, though, they were writing modern day mythology, which is just a different sort of book.

What novel you read that could've been a 4/5 or even 5/5 if it wasn't for one major flaw that was too big that your rating for it became 1/5. for me it's Sand Omnibus, the setting and story are really decent but the prose is so RETARDED it's infuriating, the faggot author writes actual nonsensical "purple prose" page after page. what a dogshit writer.

It's interesting how these things affect people completely differently. Incest does not bother me at all. I kind of like it, actually. Interracial and rape make me drop a book pretty much instantly, though.
