I think Refn is actually better he has better aesthetics and not as pretentious as PTA. I took the Master as being about control. "Every man has his master" type of thing.
PSH 'master' could be seen as his wife since she dominates him when giving a handjob, and PSH character himself is the master of this whole group of people. Joaquin is the master of himself or legitimately can't be controlled, which would explain the ending.

It sort of reminds of me Scott Spencer saying all his books were based off Freud's 'Civilization and its Discontents" in that it's about people acting against a controlled civilization that tries to put them in a box.
