is there a particular reason why you're reposting other people's posts. I saw another thread where you did the same thing?

Over reliance on genre conventions and meeting the preconceived expectations of its market.
People take these flaws and paint it upon every book under the genre label.

more like fantasy was turned into a genre-fiction, like romance and thriller, by a publisher called Del Rey after LotR turned into a mainstream success. when people talk about fantasy as genre fiction they're referring almost exclusively to stuff like Sword of Shannara, not Gormenghast or Little, Big or The Vorrh

It's not inherently bad, but they generally rely on presenting a certain aesthetic or something novel rather than making the most of every word and subtly.

I think it’s partly because the fans of the genre are retarded and trans.

Fantasy is secretly the best genre of all time.
Waaayyyy better than Shakespeare and Milton and all the other dumb authors they force you to read in high school.
Everyone knows this. Your English teacher knows this. But it's a big secret they don't wanna admit cuz if they did then publishing houses wouldn't be able to keep making money by forcing school libraries to buy Shakespeare.
Why is it the best genre? Cuz it's got cool stuff like Dragons and sex scenes and cool fights. Manga's the second best genre and then video games. Trust me on this.

I feel like it's getting better, but historically it has been a niche where right wing writers can escape to to write about their politics. There are so many bad politics especially in sci-fi that it made the genre unpalatable. But it's getting better for sure.

SF and fantasy are both mostly shite but only SF has the range of emotion and depth that is really moving. The Lord of the Rings however is the major sole exception. I know of way more deep and engaging SF books than fantasy, even excluding the massively overrated ones like Dune and Book of the New Sun – for example, Solaris, The Time Machine, UBIK, Childhood's End, Speaker for the Dead, Never Let Me Go are all moving novels of both soft- and hard- SF. Meanwhile fantasy is just capeshit schlock. Even the best fantasy with the best characterization, like ASOIAF, fails to present itself as anything other than worldbuilding.

Two reasons, and I'm saying this as someone who LOVES hard sci-fi and high fantasy. Number one, MOST of it is objectively bad. It's schlock, it's formulaic, it's derivative of works that came before it.

That's one problem that every genre has. Most of every genre is just crap. It might be entertaining, but that's all.

Sci-fi and fantasy have the additional problem that a lot of the most popular works and writers are bad, and a lot of the good works and writers aren't popular.

It's not bad, it's just more focused on aesthetic, so it's not really as "deep" as the height of literary canon. And if such a novel comes along as to be considered as such it stops being considered "merely" genre.
