Humans do not have a gender. They have a biological sex. A person is either a male or female, immutably. There are a small amount of abnormalities, people with chromosomal disorders for example, and I don't particularly care how they are dealt with. The existence of abnormality does not negate normality, but establishes it.

Gender only applies to words. They can be masculine, feminine, or neuter. People do not have genders ergo they cannot have an unknown gender. If someone's SEX is unknown, that person can be referred to as "they" until their sex is ascertained, at which point they will be called the pronoun that corresponds to their sex. This isn't hard.
