20672427 No.20672427 [Reply] [Original]

This board got me into reading and it sucks to see the wretched state of /lit/ right now. I've seen a bunch of low iq niggers here unironically getting filtered by Don Quixote.

If you're like me who actually cares about literature and in want of genuine discussion, report irrelevant threads, never reply to bait posts. Help contribute to the salvation of this board.

The big issue is that good threads get derailed too easily or die quickly. The number of shitposters outweigh readers

>> No.20672459

I think we can separate actual readers from shitposters by making reading clubs of authors a regular part of /lit/.

The read together of James Joyce are the cleanest threads there are from shitposts because you'd have to actually read to participate in this specific discussion on this specific book.

The issue is that not everyone wants to read the same book. If we were able to have multiple read along threads going at the same time that would be great. Unfortunately I don’t think /lit/ has the population of readers needed to do that

There's no saving the board. It's a demographic problem supported by data from the school system. Smartphones have shifted human cognitive ability to a new benchmark far below where it was before their widespread adoption. The whole fucking bell curve stood up and walked a significant distance to the left. They tried to hide this phenomenon by restructuring standardized tests. You can't compare against old data if the examination is a new process. The long term ramifications are just now coming out: the zoomers are retarded. It's not anything to do with their generation specifically, smartphones would have done a number on whatever generation had the misfortune to grow up with one in hand.

>> No.20672707

People from those boards have bled into /lit/. This is one of the few moderately populated boards on 4chan where good posters still try to take things seriously. It's very easy to spot tourists who are less interested in literature and more of the topic just by what they post and how they interact with the subject. They want to see /lit/ like they see other boards: a fast entertainment stream where witticism and memes dominate. This is why threads with nearly no pictures in them are almost devoid of shitposters, because tourists aren't here to engage in discussion. They don't want to read hundreds of words from anons having a discussion. They want fast, topical entertainment, and when they can't find it, they make it by shitposting like they would on other boards. Bad threads always have short OPs, catchy images meant to draw attention (like this one), or an extremely shallow topic, and it's amazing how common they are now. For a board this slow, you would think people here would be wise enough to nuke shit threads. However, more people are here who want that fast entertainment you can get from /tv/ or /pol/ or /v/ but in the literature flavor, so they reply and bump the threads. Hence you get a constant flow of shitposting and the people who enable it.

I spoke to a few admins a while ago getting a ban overturned, I mentioned how i would be better to create new boards for the main subjects that distract away from the topics here - but no they didn't want to.

Not sure whether they don't have the ability to open the webpage manager and create a new page, or whether they actually don't care but bear in mind this entire site has picked up the overflow of all of the west during the period of massive internet censorship of every other platform and they probably don't know how to adapt to the opportunity.

A rate of five thousand posts per day should be able to sustain atleast a handful of read alongs, even if we assume a majority of those are shitposts. I usually hate generals, but it seems to be our best shot.
Beyond that, all of you should start reporting every single-sentence OP. The only way to curb this shit is to employ stricter moderation. Sage and report.

This whole site has gone to shit but this board is particularly bad for the simple reason that they refuse to delete off topic /pol/ threads on other boards. /pol/ crossposting has been so prevalent on this site for the last 5-6 years and it's ruined any chance of discussing anything other than identity politics and culture war bullshit. they will create thinly veiled threads seething about some minority group. or they will come into a thread and derail it with the /pol/ shit. it's the same thing in every thread. janitors need to do a better job of deleting these threads, deleting these posts within on topic threads, banning users, sending them back to /pol/ where they belong, but they will never do it. just go into any thread discussing a female author, an author who is a gay man or a jewish author, for example, and look at 90% of the replies. it's not possible to have any legitimate discussion here.

You have a containment board for your racist support group called /pol/. Just go there and be racist and let us discuss literature over here. It's not about being a snowflake and needing a safe space, just wanting to keep discussion on topic. I saw a thread the other day with a topic to the effect of "what books discuss the rise of cultural marxism and forced lgbtq". this is not a thread about literature and no one arguing in good faith would try to say that it is. there are no books about "cultural marxism" because this is an anti-semitic dog whistle and not a real term used by people who write (or read) books.

another example- there was a thread the other day about bret easton ellis and i don't exaggerate when i say 90% of the replies were just throwaway comments about him being gay. completely unlrelated to literature and just derailing the thread. i'm not offended by homophobic comments. i've been coming to 4chan for 15 years. i just wish the janitors would make even the slightest effort to keep boards on topic. we quite literally have a dedicated containment board for racist homophobic future school shooters and you still insist on your free speech rights to infect every other board on the site with off topic bullshit.

This was common enough on /lit/ before, it's just that back then they were actually /lit/ memes. If you want people to make good posts then make threads worth posting in. Trying to get a decent discussion out of the thousandth 'what did i think of it?' or book recommendation thread is like trying to draw blood from a stone. This ignores that good threads that require thought and effort posts need time. Threads can die in hours now. Also not every thread needs to be a dissertation. As long as a thread is on topic it is fine IMO. Nothing wrong with someone writing a few sentences to give their opinion on a book. There just aren’t as many readers on this board as there used to be. Threads about non meme books will receive few replies because most in new lit probably haven’t read it. It’s a numbers game. It’s pretty clear that the issue is the demographics on lit. Anons who actually read have jumped ship. It is important to get readers back. Lit has lost the ability to police itself. It needs a mod or janny to step in and delete or ban off topic posts

I didn't say threads need to be dissertations, i said they need to have a specific point or topic. Restrictions create structure, which helps guide discussion. Things that are too open-ended do as much to kill discussion as simple 'yes' or 'no' binaries. Are they 'fine' in the sense they are ontopic? sure, but don't then bemoan the decline in post quality and 'where have all the effort posters gone?' if you only spit out sterile boilerplate non-topics.
And in terms of post rate, we've already returned to pre-covid levels, so the 'in hours' point no longer even applies. Threads and can and do stick around for days with minor babysitting. In the end, you only need two people to have a good discussion. If this place can't muster up even that, then it is truly irredeemable. Jannies won't fix anything, they never have fixed anything, and they never will fix anything. If it really is a demographics issue then we should call it quits here and wash our hands of the place, because nothing will fix it. But i think there still is life in the board, it is just remains latent because there is nothing for it to work with.

This board would be dead if every thread needed a specific point to go on. I’m not able to make high quality effort posts for some book I read once seven years ago. I’ll give my thoughts on what I remember though. Sometimes basic comments need to bounce around between a few anons before discussion opens up. I’ve seen many threads that were more or less a general about a book become successful. I think this board needs to get back to the basics and just have anons give their opinion on what they are reading. Lit needs to learn how to crawl before it can walk again. I mostly just lurk at this point and jump in when I see a thread on a book or writer that I’ve read to bump it. Outside of 10-20 meme books, I see very few threads. There is little incentive to make a thread on a more niche book because the numbers aren’t in your favor. I really think the situation is dire. The board has been going downhill for a while, but even a year ago you could have success discussing minor works if you posted at the right time. The quality of lit absolutely plummeted in 2022. I think it is past the point of no return because it really needs help from mods who never help as you’ve said. I’m gearing up to make the leap from here but it just sucks with nowhere else to go.
