>Btw, doesn't /sffg/ have its own goodreads books to read every week or something? Why aren't people discussing them?

It began with an anon who had the thread pick a monthly book. The book was then discussed in a thread at the end of month and only ever that thread. Only a few ever participated and then it was almost always short single posts. Around a year later that anon quit. I made the Goodreads group around the time he quit. The thread continued on for a couple months more out of inertia.

Then someone started the discord server. I put the books that were chosen there as the book. Sometimes it was monthly, sometimes it was twice or four times a month. Discussion ensued in the server far more than there ever was in the thread. However, even then it was mostly only ever two people did so, myself and the server founder. Sometimes others joined. This went on for roughly two years. I copypasted some into Goodreads group

Eventually I left the server and since the start of this year or so have been putting just whatever in the hopes that maybe members will see something that I've read or posted as decoration, because that's all it really is at this point. I would've discussed in the thread rather than the discord server, but that's not where discussion for what I've read or have interest in. There have been other difficulties as well. I tried discussing, but there was almost never any response. That's just how it is and I'm fine with that now. It's understandable that people want to have full control over what and how they read.

It's interesting what I see in my activity feed on GR, which allows for basic monitoring of the results of what I do. I also can see other trends. Just recently four members finished the same book at the same. I don't know how much they discussed it though. I'd assume from some other /lit/ group. On a different note, rarely does anyone say anything actionable and/or constructive so I just as I do. I'm entirely open to suggestions about whatever.

If anyone goes through the mega in the OP a lot then it should be evident that I'm not overly concerned about the nature of what's included.

TL;DR: No.

Orphan Black - The Next Chapter Season 2 (2021-2022)
Season 2 written by Madeline Ashby, Lindsay Smith, E.C. Myers, Malka Older, Heli Kennedy, and Mishell Baker.

Season 1*: >>/lit/thread/S17470514#p17470531

This was calm by comparison to the previous season and the latter seasons of the TV series, but I liked that. Sometimes it becomes overdramatic. As with the first season it remains an ensemble cast. I'm not really in favor of there being an in-universe book called "Orphan Black", an autobiography originally marketed as science fiction that chronicles everything that has happened, minus the parts that would send them to prison. That's mostly because it's just added in as fanservice, but unlike the various other fanservice scenes, it didn't resonate with me.

Following the events of the first season, which was eight months ago, clones have been outed and serve as a stand-in for marginalized people with a few differences. The antagonist is a Goop-like cult of personality with a dark side. They peddle platitudes and junk products to lure vulnerable members in to more easily exploit them. There's various mentions of contemporary issues, some political poking, and memes now and again.

Although this is meant to be a serialized audio work I once again read it instead. I'm not sure how much of a difference that makes. A lot of times it reads more like a script than prose, but that didn't detract overly much for me. There were a few typos and misused words, but I'll say that was because it was meant to be listened to. Yes, I'm quite biased in its favor.

Rating: 3.5/5

*4 may have been too high for the first season, probably 3.5. Maybe even rounded down, for both. It's difficult to know due to bias.

So I've finally finished Mother of Learning. I can see why people like it as a whole, and it's clear even the author sees where his flaws are as the afterword showed (sparse character descriptions, everybody having a similar 'voice', pacing being too slow or too fast, etc.) so I'm not gonna dig too much on those sorts of flaws and instead discuss it more as a total part. The first two arcs are... Bland. Zorian is remarkably unadventurous and weirdly paranoid to the point of "and then some restarts happened where he learned this" just kept cropping up to the point it felt like a joke. It takes basically until the last quarter of arc 2 for anything resembling a plot to start happening, because Zorian just somehow manages to not really get involved. Arc 3 was the best part by far, even if it felt a little stretched out near the end. The ending itself I was generally pretty happy with, though it felt almost absurdly foreshadowed. Like, no shit was he gonna do some fucky mental shit to let Zach live. The epilogue, though, felt a little lacklustre. It made sense, sure, but it didn't even really feel necessary if it was basically just "the most obvious follow-up stuff happened". There's also a lot of characters who seem more important than they are, and I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing, really. A lot of characters exist solely to be the focus of a chapter or two as Zorian learns about them, and they almost all have some stuff going on, sometimes to the point we don't even really learn their whole deal even by the end of things. I suppose some of that is a remnant of the fact that Mother of Learning was written as, effectively, a test-drive for a world the author was making, so he kept wanting to show off cool but inconsequential things.
I dunno where I'd rank MoL overall. Pacing and boring beginnings knock it down, but good worldbuilding and thought-out planning of events (though sometimes there's a bit of 'Zorian just has super mind magic don't worry' cheating to explain how he can do so much), along with an engaging plot when it actually gets going do push it up. Somewhere like a 7 or 8/10, I think.
I'm gonna be reading Gideon the Ninth after this because I want something a bit less 'dense', so we'll see where that goes.

The plot is totally linear and has almost 0 twists, 2/3 of the story is boring and mc is the most dull character ever. And you rate it 8/10.

Never read it but I can't imagine a story less dense than mol.

>> No.20463502

Well, MoL has probably too many details needlessly thrown about, sometimes as hints for future events (though those almost always get the brunt of the focus because the author isn't good at hiding foreshadowing), hence the density notion.

Just caught up to the latest volume of Salvos (A Monster Evolution LitRPG) and I think its the best LitRPG I've read up to date. This is mostly because its structured in a volume format with clear goals but still has that webnovel feel where the main characters don't feel like they're trapped into a plotline but are free to travel the world as they like. I used to absolutely abhor LitRPG but this webnovel made me realize that most of its demerits are from bad authors taking a spin on the genre. Without infinite skill-leveling, thousands of skills jammed into one character, no classes, no skill evolution, and level bloating, LitRPG becomes an extremely satisfying genre that makes you invested into the mc's skills. Though, even with how much I like Salvos there are some extremely dry chapters especially the first few in the netherworld where you haven't warmed up to the main character yet. Also, the side character chapters are fucking annoying. Anyways, the 350ish chapters out right now on royalroad are pretty good.

>infinite skill-leveling
This is mostly a problem in asian litrpg and stories that are too shit for me to read

>thousands of skills
kek this is an overexaggeration but here is Azarinth Healer's stat page
https://azarinth-healer.fandom.com/wiki/Ilea_Spears/Status
In reality the problem isn't that there are too many skills but that there is not enough time for an author to introduce a skill and implant it into the reader's mind, which causes people to have no idea what the main character is capable of except some generalized notion of punching space magic etc...

>level bloating
https://azarinth-healer.fandom.com/wiki/Ilea_Spears/Status
she has three classes at level 750, if that isn't level-bloating I don't know what is. 200 should be max and there should not be more than a few beings at the top of the system. They shouldn't come out of nowhere when the mc reaches a certain level.

>no classes
When I wrote this I was thinking of worlds where skills are easily obtainable outside of classes. You shouldn't be able to spend an afternoon jumping around an attain a general skill, there shouldn't be more general skills than class skills, Azarinth Healer also does this. Having a cooking skill is retarded, whats the point of having a chef class if any mutt can attain a generalized cooking skill?

I do wonder about the effectiveness of having these sorts of things being accessible for a LitRPG. Honestly, I suppose the 'ideal' sort of way to write a LitRPG would be to have a character sheet on a sort of side-bar that gradually fills up as a reader reads through, but you'd probably need a site dedicated to that sort of thing to make that work. Personally I'm of the opinion that the sheet should only be brought up in full when a major change happens.

Just finished Dungeon Crawler Carl book 5. While it's not as good as book 3 (apex Carl), it's an uptick from book 4 and gives me hope for the future of the series. The author seems to have found a two-step way to march forward, with autism setting up the plot and character empathy executing it. You've all suffered for it, and this author has a sense of it. I feel good to be manipulated in this way.

>> No.20464418

>>20464412
My sole problem with the series is how much off-screen planning happens now. I get it, you don't want to spoil the plan because that's the big climax thing, but it leads to a lot of "Oh by the way Carl was doing this all along he just didn't tell you even though you're in his head". Which is fine a few times, but it feels like a constant thing.

Why ruin something like a great story and great mc by bringing this aspect(intimate body parts which leads to sexual thoughts which leads to sex and relationships and which leads to shitty and dumb plot, shitty character interactions, shitty dialogues and a shitty story) of their body that is completely irrelevant and should not be used unless its just porn and not literature?

Finished The Land Across by Gene Wolfe. His second novel I've read that was written post-Long Sun (90s), or post-2010 for that matter.
I thought it started slower, and a lot simpler than his other novels.
It takes place in a strange fictional former communist country that isn't on any maps and is never named. Definitely Slavic flavoured, but all the character names are distinctly Greek influenced as well. So all the dialogue of the people there is written as if spoken by ESLs. It's done smartly, and with a purpose as it reveals the mindset and personalities of the characters through their word choice, but it is more of a nuisance than normal English obviously.
A travel writer travels there and immediately gets apprehended by the authorities, his passport is stolen, and he has to figure out how to get back to the US. It's a detective/mystery story with supernatural fantasy elements.
I think I didn't like it so much at first because the guy doesn't have freedom of movement since he's a prisoner. But it really picks up in the second half, I read most of that in one sitting. It's as enigmatic then as anything else Wolfe has written, lots of stuff to think about after it ends.

I started Ice by Anna Kavan and that's really interesting and short so I'm going to read that next. Then Distress by Greg Egan, which I also read the first chapter of. Egan seems really good, like really good, I'm looking forward to reading Distress and at least half of his other novels have fascinating premises I'm excited to read.

No shit I was specific you idiot. Because in that world they don't try to turn you into metal and then have lightning strike you for some epic scene. It tries (like many lots of other takes on magic) to be a tiny bit more realistic in how you'd kill someone. And if you can cause explosions in space, you'd do it on someone's head.

Part 1

>>20464054

Anon, you've really just triggered the shit out of me. As a veteran of LitRPGs, meaning basically all the popular fast-paced daily-updated power progressions, I'm confident in saying that Salvos is the worst of them all. I wouldn't go as far as to call it horrible, but it's really bad in comparison to others. Anyone who reads Azarinth Healer will know how Salvos pales in comparison when you look at the most important aspects of a power-progression LitRPG: the way the protagonist progresses, the system and how it works, fight scenes, and how interesting Classes are.

Salvos manages to fall short on every account. Protagonist's progression lacks any substance, it's just the MC killing things and leveling up, in the most uninteresting way possible. There is no real struggle, no weigh to anything. The system is paper-thin, basically slapped some stats onto the world, Skills don't make any fucking sense, the world doesn't make sense if you think about it for more than a few seconds. To talk about the fighting scenes one most talk about the writing, and the writing is bad. Not bad as with errors, but just uninteresting and empty. Slow and tedious recital of every move the character and enemy do.

As for Classes, they are just straight up uninspired (which is a problem with the story as a whole, but I'm getting to that). I'm just going to post an example of a character having a choice of a new class when they reach relatively extreme level of power, with less than 1% of the population even coming close. How does the description look like?

>[Arch Battle Mage]

>A [Arch Battle Mage] is an [Archmage] of close combat. The pinnacle of magic, an [Archmage] has seen the endless limits of magic, and will not stop until they reach that top. But as a [Battle Mage], they do not allow themselves to falter, even when the enemy closes the distance.

>+20 [Strength]

>+20 [Wisdom]

>+15 [Endurance]

>+10 [Vitality]

>+10 [Agility]

>> No.20466253

Part 2

I hope I don't need to comment how barebones and pathetic the mentioned above description is. The writing there is downright forced, the author not having any idea what to write and vomiting generic words onto the page in a moment that's one of the most interesting and fascinating events in a LitRPG, a Class Change. Sadly, it goes for every Class description in the story. The story itself has a solid core: A Demon goes to a human plane and gets two friends, showing that she can act civilized, while having many adventures. I can give the story one thing, Salvos as a character is interesting and her being non-human Demon is well-written, to a degree at least. But every other character in the story is shit. One is an Isekaied Hero, the other a mundane Mage. There is not much to tell about them because of how flat they are, described more by their roles than any personality.

The main problem is that the dialogues are simply horrendous, the worst part of the entire story. I've seen mobile games with more lively dialogues, and the NPCs in them appear more real than the characters in Salvos as well. Only Salvos has something of a voice, seeing any other character talking sends shivers down my spine. But that's probably because the author has no idea how people interact, as everything in this story is derivative.

Yes, everything is derivative. There's a famous writing saying, "Good Writers Borrow; Great Writers Steal." We know how well some already existing ideas can be used in different contexts or storylines, enriching the story and the world without making it look distasteful. The author of Salvos cannot do that tastefully. 'Uninspired' is one word that aptly summarizes the entire world and plotlines, not a single element of this world has been imagined by the author. It's all stolen, and badly so. Inspirations with Anime, Azarinth Healer, Beneath the Dragoneye Moons and The Wandering Inn are clear as day, and only made worse by comparing Salvos to those works.

Maybe if someone starts reading webnovels with Salvos they can consume it without gagging every other minute as would every person that had already read the same thing, but somewhere else and in a better way. From what I've written I believe it's clear what my opinion on Salvos is, but there's one more case to be touched upon. One last thing then, the author is fucking delusional. He believes himself to be the second coming of webnovel Christ and goes ballistic at every critic, especially now that his other works have been torn to shreds by the users and reviewers on Royalroad. I do not believe this will change any time soon, so you know the writing will not improve.

TL;DR
Salvos is shit. It's not horrible, but every other popular webnovel has better characters, story, LitRPG system, dialogues or progression. Don't read it, just read something else, like Beneath the Dragoneye Moons or Azarinth Healer. They are the same, but much better.
