Well, is this character-driven or plot-driven? If character-driven, think of the trajectory the characters are on and what would be an endpoint that makes sense (what their development or arc leads them to, why would they go there, etc.), whereas a plot-driven ending is, well, based on what needs to be done to wrap up the issues in the plot in a way that feels satisfying with how the story's presented itself.

>> No.20445885

I think I'd say that they're almost equal parts both. I wanted to write a character whose desire is to be a non-participant in the larger plot kind of defines their motives. Everything that happens and all of the danger they're subjected to all seem "incredibly unfair", and the hyperawareness of their own mortality drives their decision making and thought process. I don't really know what end seems more fitting, and I think it'd likely be a combination of a character change internally influencing a decision being made towards the end.

I'm not finding myself enjoying how system menus are translated to a sterile audio, repeating itself whenever accessed. I also haven't started Lord of Mysteries as of yet, taking a breath after Ave Rem.

I really like DotF, but it and and other Litrpgs like that were never written with intention of being audiobooked. I assumed the narrator modified the text and only mentioned the changes, but apparently someone was retarded enough to read the whole thing. Madness, reek madness.

As for MoL, Arc 3 will probably be the best part of the story for you. Zach&Zorian duo is hilarious, especially now that they are the experienced veterans of the loop and ready to rumble, all brakes are off. Their adventures together are platinium-grade MoL content.

>> No.20446257

>>20446238
Different guy here, I'm currently reading Arc 3 and yeah I'll generally say it's the best part. Arc 1 was a decent mystery, stifled by Zorian being incredibly frustrating and unadventurous. Arc 2 was a nothing, because despite broadening his scope, Zorian continued to just do almost everything alone, even with convincing some people of the time loop, and nothing really felt like it happened until the end when he actually talks to Zach. Arc 3's like "Oh, right, characters" because for once we're not just on a one-man show with Zorian. Hell, Zorian's simulacrums bickering and being bitter with each other and with him are great. He's such a shithead even he can't help making fun of himself.

The first novel I read was Dune so the setting will very likely have some kind of sci-fi shit. a mix of fantasy races (or humans with different names to denote their different skin colors and features) different planets and high-tech but no laser guns.
I'm not a native English speaker so I will just write a setting in the form of incoherent notes about races, professions and locations. the first thing that came to mind after reading Dune , I was reading the book of Samuel at the same time, was to write a David-like figure escaping from his king's kingdom who keeps meeting cutthroats from different races across the different planets. But my English is getting worse now that I'm in the army and not shitposting and reading 24/7, So i will settle for a world-building thing that I might eventually post here on /lit/.

I'm only 11 chapters into Water Sleeps, but the new annalist may be my favorite of the narrators. After Murgen's more self involved and introspective books it's refreshing to have greater focus given to description of the world around the characters and a somewhat more objective voice. Also so far the voice feels more distinct from Croaker than the others.

The collapse rate of past civilizations is not relevant to us because our civilization is of a completely different form than anything pre-industrial. We are globally interconnected in a way that has never occurred before and shocks to far flung parts can have huge ramifications elsewhere in ways impossible in the past. COVID wouldn't have even been noticed in ancient eras but in ours it managed to cause a global supply chain gridlock leading to shortages of all kinds of shit. Imagine how much worse something like an antibiotic resistant plague would be now vs 500 years ago when it would spread in weeks rather than years to every corner of the globe.

Mayan civilization collapsed entirely, Roman civilization collapsed in the west, and there are fuckton of lost works from around/slightly before then. We don't even have the all the works of Aristotle, let alone lots of less famous writers who are entirely lost. And I said "from our era", I never implied that shit like the Bible would be lost entirely. My post was implying that the fictional context surrounding LOTR would be lost and it would be assumed to be a real translation of an actual ancient epic. Learn to read before you become a pedant.

With this newfound ability to modify and living organism, they start a religion to do exactly that to every living organism in the universe. Humans have colonized the galaxy once the Qu have found them, and they transform humans into a series of horrifying monsters. There's a lot of detail. It's sick shit but very entertaining.

Whenever I see good webnovels that gained acclaim, it's mostly bad writers that simply didnt care that what they write is cringe and just kept typing because they wanted, needed to write. They all get better in the end. What you need is the modicum of positive reinforcement from yourself or your peers, optionally from your readers if you post your shit somewhere. But above else you just need to feel the need to write, and not care about the quality too much. The story is more important than its quality.

The real value in publishing came from its ability to mass produce. There's no value in mass production now that copying is free, so they are left only with their ability to market you. Between eliminating the middle man and monetizing superfans, you would need a mass audience 10 times the size of a niche following just to break even. >> No.20449203

>>20449129
Well physical books outsell ebooks 4 to 1, but self-published ebook royalty to paperback royalty is something like 8 to 1. And the royalty on a self-publised ebook is nearly 3x the royalty of a pro-published one. And does your publisher let you sell pre-released chapters for $10/month? Plus, nothing keeps you from selling them paperback rights after you've found your audience.

>> No.20449237

>>20449203
Finding an audience is the hardest part by far. Marketing can make terrible products best sellers. There aren't really stats that I'm aware of that compares the median income between the two. I wouldn't be surprised if the median income equality wasn't worse for self-published. There's a few self-published stars, but they are most likely extreme outliers. If the Onlyfans stats are anything to go by, the vast majority lose money and put in a lot of time.

>>20449237
I was going type something different, but changed it so minus the word "equality".

>> No.20449271

>>20449237
Median income between the two is meaningless, because not every writer has the same motivations. Also, obviously the self-published bin will contain more garbage because there is by definition no filter at all. And the pareto problem applies to published authors as well.

But simply put 1 ebook sale at 70% =
1 ebook at 25% + 6 paperbacks at 7.5%. Are they moving that much more for you? If their promotional power could make a star of everyone in the stable then yeah, but that's not how it is. Anyway, I don't really care as I'm not a writer but there's never been a better time to be locked out of the system.

>> No.20449357

>>20449271
I had to see about some stuff, so I was delayed. Median income isn't meaningless. People tend to like to know ROI, or simply the expected value of their efforts. I agree that not every writer has the same motivations. Self-publishing, especially web fiction, is more of a side gig / content mill activity.

The royalties argument is miselading because the vast majority of traditionally published authors never earn out, which is to say they never sell enough to equal their advance. I think a lot of writers would prefer to have their money upfront and right away before they've written anything rather than writing and doing a lot and then only getting royalties which may never amount to much. From what I understand the main money for them comes from superfans/whales on their crowdfunding and then they find a company to help market their books to make more. I can agree that it's never been a better time to do it on your own, but that doesn't make it better than being part of the system for the average author.

Xianxia/Cultivation/Gamelit Reviewfag back... again. Had a long car drive so I ended up finishing Beware of Chicken.

There's not a lot to say about this series that I haven't said about others. The main character Jin Roh is not actually Jin Roh, he's been body snatched by someone from Earth. There's no explanation for the true character, other than he knows how to farm and originated from Earth. From the very start of the book the MC is an unlikeable, body snatching psycho. Finding no moral issue with stealing a man's life before settling into it fully.

This is rarely touched upon unless the narrator needs to access Jin's memories to answer a question about his false past. He uses this ability to lie to the women he chooses to pursue. Within the first few chapters, the love interest (one of them) springs up. After two chapters, they are enraptured with each other and plan to be married. There is no depth to any of these characters, no soul or spirit; they are ALL caricatures that accomplish nothing.

The cultivation system is from the template - cultivators have a dantian, they take in qi. Only difference in this approach is that Jin Roh is indirectly nurturing spirit beasts - i.e his farm animals. A rooster named Big D, pigs named Peppa and Chunky. Every farm animal has a zoomer name and get up to secret animal antics when Jin isn't around. These segments are all poorly written and boring.

The author calls it 'parody' yet does nothing original with the genre. Building a harem around a farmer instead of a member of a sect, making animals into underlings instead of humans. What's worse is that people fucking love this garbage. I made the mistake of checking the author's patreon and he earns $14,000 a month for... drivel. It stuns me that books like this are considered the height of the genre.

This book was HIGHLY recommended to me. I feel like I should end friendships over it.

I liked the later parts of the Ender saga with Orson really doubling down on the ethical dilemmata arising from interaction with alien species. The original Ender's Game concerned itself with the question whether preemptive xenocide against the buggers can be justified in light of the apparent impossibility to even communicate with them. So then come along the pequeninos, we CAN communicate with them, yet preemptive xenocide might STILL be the rational thing to do, because part of the pequeninos' very life cycle is nothing short of the most devastating plague ever encountered by man. Despite the general tone of Speaker onwards being very different from Ender's Game, it expands upon the themes of the first novel very nicely.

What bothered me personally how esoteric it all became towards the end, and the whole affair getting resolved by one of the biggest dei ex machina in all of fiction.

Ender was always a whiny bitch, btw.

>> No.20450970

Anons, I'm finally doing it. I'm DEEP DICKING into fantasy and science fiction books.

After finishing The Hobbit and reading a little bit of The Lord of the Rings, I have acquired a stack of books and I'm going to read through all of them.

I quit gaming and I have no other hobby (outside of learning Japanese, but I'm already fluent in Japanese, so I'm not required anymore to invest a lot of time in it).

This is my list and god have mercy, because I don't have a lot of free time and I hope I finish this stack of books in this year (keep in mind that I follow "Make it Stick", "Deep Learning", "Atomic Habits", and "How to read a book" rules, so I'm not reading like those retards who brag on Youtube that they "read" 5 billion books in the last week).

My reading list (and god have mercy, because finishing all those books in this year looks nearly impossible)
>TLotR
>Mistborn (the first 6 books)
>The great book of Amber (1 to 10)
>Wheel of Time (0 to 14)
>Malazan Book of the Fallen (1 to 10)
>The Stormlight Archive (1 to 4...)
>The Black Company (all 3? books)
>Kingkiller Chronicle ( 1 to 2.5...)
>The Book of the New Sun (all 4)
>A Song of Ice and Fucking finish the Series ffs George RR Sharting (1 to never gonna get finished/Sanderson will finish it like he always does finish books for people who are life quitters before their books are finished)
>Dune (all six books)
>Hyperion (all four books)
>Witcher (all eight books)

And if you ask yourself why I even post it here, it was literally the "Recommended reading chars" which not only got me into fantasy, but also stole my money and now my time. Fuck whoever made those charts, but now I'm in the fantasy autism spectrum and my autism now forces me to read all of it.

Either I finish all those books in this year or die trying. Or as "Atomic Habits" would say: "I'm not trying to finish those books in this year. I'm a reader and this alone will carry my lazy ass to finish all those books in this year"

Well, the base assumption here is that all intelligent species should deserve the same rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, whether or not they're humans. Saying that only your own species matters and all others can get fucked is certainly another way to look at it. But then the buggers are also perfectly justified in trying to exterminate humanity to start with and Orson apparently didn't want to go there.

Hence the dilemma introduced by Speaker. Given that the buggers attacked first it's easy to say "they just got what they had coming to them" but the pequeninos are not hostile per se. Their biology is just fundamentally at odds with human biology and poses a tremendous risk. Does that make it okay to preemptively kill them all? Orson does take care to point out that the humans have their own weapons of mass destruction, which they have willingly used in the past, so can't the pequeninos claim the same right to preemptive self defense, following that same reasoning? I think it's an interesting topic to explore. If I just wanted to read "haha xeno go boom" I'd just 40k novels or something I guess.

Unless I meant that as strictly: enjoyment = gratification of a desire. I even highlighted that there can be a longer-lasting pleasure of knowledge and learning from a lesson, which is a Platonic idea.
>Why not just ask for literary sci-fi/fantasy?
Not everything that is literary is deep nor profound nor teaches a lesson. A lot of it is art for art's sake, especially in the 20th century when what we call fantasy and sci fi crystallised into the form we discuss in this thread.
I'll check those books out.

That doesn't make sense since genre fiction grew out of texts such as Frankenstein or The Raven. Further, we can look at links with surrealism and symbolism after Poe, or even epic poetry and sagas, e.g., the Eddas (especially for Tolkien), the Beowulf, the Odyssey, the Iliad, Orlando Furioso, and The Faerie Queene. Shakespeare is a prime example of someone who wrote genres, often fantastical, and a lot of his reworking of Ovid appears even today in (dark) Fantasy. There isn't a clear distinction between these categories, but I do think there is a spectrum.

God I hate the current state of /pol/tards. After Trump it's been nothing but brainlets crying like actual faggots nonstop because they're so mentally lacking and damaged. I miss the days when it was mostly edgy atheists and liberal minded, but I guess that's the price of progress when reason and logic finally start becoming more mainstream and all the retards and losers are driven out to the periphery of society. 4chab is the last place the stupid have to vent and cope, pretending their edginess is a substitute for intelligence.

It's getting tiresome having to re-open these fucking abortions just to quote them at people when they want to get smart. My apologies for shortening it... Jin Roh was beaten to death during a match against outer disciples at his sect. Seeing the vacancy, our body snatcher swoops in and takes over Jin Roh's life. Occupying the space where his soul must have been. He then goes on to say...

'Jin was full of wanting to become a powerful cultivator, a master among masters, and do whatever it is the dickbags who run this place do, which is presumably to be dicks, dickishly. I kinda... didn't care about his motivations. My body now, buddy. Sorry, not sorry.'

You're right, he's not a psychotic at all. Didn't steal another man's body, and there surely wasn't a demonstration in the first two chapters where the body snatcher had to actively suppress Jin's memories and being, lest he be consumed by it. Disregarding all of THAT, take the dialogue at face value. What the fuck is redeemable about this writing style? What's worth DEFENDING?

Do right by yourself and stand for a better quality of writing.

Anon, I don't think you have the context to judge it properly. It wasn't supposed to be treated as 'Jin doesn't care about the person that got killed*,' but instead as a comedic twist on an already beaten to death 10000 times 'I transmigrated to another's person body in Xianxia' cliche. Taking it to at face value is retarded as hell, you are missing the entire point. I do think that Beware of Chicken is not a masterwork of writing, but it's one of the better works in the genre and the stury works by paroding it. Things like cultivation system being basic as fuck and not imaginative is not a problem because these things NOT MATTERING is the exact fucking point.

The story is basic, the protagonist is OP MC without trying, it's basically a wish fullfilment of another kind, but it's still a funny, comfy story. I do not write this to tell you that you are wrong, but to say that you lack the context of the genre and your expectations for the story might not have been the right ones. This is anti-xianxia story, you are not supposed to like it FOR being xianxia.

*I don't know how you could have missed that (probably due to audiobook, audiobook fags are known for missing details because books are written to be read by eyes, not some fucking person reading them out-loud), but the original guy is no more dead than new Jin, and his 'soul' is just as broken as Earth guy's, who died too after all, it's just that together they make a whole person and Jin has control..
On another topic, I don't remember you mentioning Worth the Candle, why? It's not only one of the best webnovels, but also the most serious work in the genre. If you want something where the character is a horrible person and the story treats that fact seriously, then try it.
