Going to be honest, I’ve been pretty mixed about Tyrion’s chapters and chapter five is no different. Though I am surprised he was the first to figure out that there were people blaming him for things he didn’t do, unlike Catelyn. Also, pretty ballsy of him to demand a trial by combat. I have started reading The Golden Age by John C Wright. I tried to read it once before but was getting filtered by the the words and terms he uses. However this time around I went into it excpecting the wording to be the way it is and just accept it and move on, and I have found that has worked well.

As of right now im a little confused on some things, however I am really liking the way he describes the perspectives of different characters. Since each charecter can alter their perspective of reality in any way they choose, its fun to visualize what they are expiriencing. Aswell as seeing the mystery of how society functions and how the charecter ties in with that mystery.

something that a lot of people trying to write fantasy/sci fi shit is that your story ultimately has to have a point, it can just be a bunch of characters running around in your d&d campaign, you should be saying something or exploring themes. and characterization is ALWAYS more important than worldbuilding

Daenerys and Aegon have both been told the same lie by different parties. In Daenerys case, it is from Illyrio, in Aegon's case it is from Varys. Both have been raised believing they are Targaryens, while their identities and memories have been questioned by other people including themselves. Illyrio, and Varys seem to be reaching for the same goal but probably have a bet on whether it will be Aegon, or Daenerys who reaches it first.

Further crackpot theory: Everybody thinks Tommen is easy to control, and manipulate because he is really young and quite passive compared to how savage, and sadist Jeoffrey was. In reality I think Tommen is actually doing the opposite, and is some sort of grand master manipulator having everyone under his thumb. This will be revealed in Winds.

Read through some of this while at work. I like the idea of amateur publishers trying to revitalize pulp storytelling, but they always seem to be missing some element or other that made the older stories work. A lot of writers don't seem to grasp just how the structure of short fiction/pulp writing works. Too often, the stories feel incomplete, like they wrote a writing exercise, or just padded out a story outline. One story in particular in this was like three pages, detailing some well liked gentleman with a wife and kids, and they move into an old house, the guy goes insane and enacts a murder-suicide, and wouldn't you know it? That's the third time that's happened in that house. That's a pretty basic set up, yet that's the story. Granted this is the first issue and contains novice writers, but I really hope writers try to be more daring in later issues.

Is this man writing the new bible? I am reading third book in the stormlight archives and he's literally writing kind of fantasy that most mythologies tend to fall in to some extent. Bigger then life in every sense. He's describing various virtues in depth, explains each of his point through various stories then goes in depth as to how to follow these ideals correctly. Finally he shows how this would benefit one and everyone. Is this okay?

This guy was a missionary for Mormon church and seems like to really believe what's he's writing. I've seen him talk about how he decided to write even if he never succeeded. He claims he'd been writing for a long time at that point and wasn't getting anywhere. But somehow it felt right to write even if he was unsuccessful. First ideal of his religion seems to be "Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination." It is one of more discussed ideas so far. And what seems interesting to me is how it's the first one and it is shared across hierarchies as it is there to safeguard rest of the ideals just like the first amendment.

On top of this he redefines what we consider reality like many eastern religions. He has lived in Asia if I'm remembering correctly. Quantum physics is part of his magic. Does he think he's a prophet or is it just me?

i found it one of the best investments ever since i've probably read thousands of dollars worth of books on it. i think the only thing that matters is that you get an e-ink one, without a lighted screen. easier on the eyes, or so i'm told. battery also lasts a long time, a week or two, depending on how much time you have to read. but you'll need a night light next to your bed if you want to read yourself to sleep.
some people really can't let go of the desire to read real books though. never been a problem for me, i've never wanted to go back.

I'm reading Nightside of the Long Sun. Can anyone tell me how the long sun works? I'm at the part where they mentioned the skylands, and I'm trying to picture it. If there are people living on the entire surface of the whorl, that would mean you can travel to the other side. But I was imagining the long sun to be in the superstructure of the 'ceiling'. If that's impossible, it must be suspended in the middle somehow, to provide day to people anywhere on the surface. But in that case I can't visualize how the shade works. It covers the long sun, but allows you to see the skylands, so it can't be opaque.
Maybe that's part of the story, I dunno.

I would say that most of ASOIAF critics are big Tolkien fans. But regardless, HBO tainted an above average series. It's hard to not dislike Martin and know that the series will never end organically if at all. There also are many issues with it that makes it very mediocre. It's not contrarianism.

The British Empire rose to power through the ability to enslave spirits/deamon from another plane of existence. Protagonist is a brilliant kid apprenticed to a mid level talentless hack of a magician. To show that he's destined for more than the magical equivalent of paper pushing, the protagonist summons a powerful djinn that should be way above his ability. The djinn in turn learns the protagonist's true name (huge no no), but unlike every other deamon ever summoned, chooses not to instantly destroy him. Political machinations are uncovered and the young magician and the djinn form an unlikely partnership.

Basically, if you can deal with the fact it's written for kids technically, the story and the worldbuilding are brilliant, and the books are one of few fantasy stories I've found genuinely funny.

The second book's secondary story is a bit of a slog but it ends up eventually dovetailing into the overall story by showing how those who don't learn their history are doomed to repeat it. Also, Kitty learns eventually that she's not always as right as her smug self-assuredness leads her to believe.

I do find it suprising that Stroud manages to write such compelling characters in Nathaniel and Bartimaeus, and then somewhat drops the ball on Kitty. Like her character could have used another pass in editing.

Keep in mind that the story was written for kids/teenagers ultimately, so the political machinations aren't Machiavelli tier. If you're expecting Game of Thrones level stuff, you will be dissapointed.

The core story is about the protagonist climbing the ranks of the magical version of the British Empire and realising that while the ruling class is busy stabbing each other in the back, the foundations of the Empire are crumbling. Let's just say that in this world British weren't the first one to try turning spirit summoning into political power and protagonist tries hard to no repeat the steps that have ultimately brought down others with the same idea.

I read it as a kid and I was absolutely convinced it would be bigger than Harry Potter.

Then I reread it a few years ago, and it held up. Sure, I could see some of the seams I didn't notice as a kid, but the worldbuilding is still awesome, the characters are amazing (except arguably Kitty) and the story overall was endearing.

I very much feel about it as I feel about Avatar The Last Airbender. It is very much targeted at kids, but there is enough brilliance there that it can transcend the limitations of its format even for adults.

No. Unironically the worst series I've ever read, and I read thousands of books. It's literally at the bottom of the books that I've read, serving as the comparison for other shit things that I read. Don't even touch that, unless you have nothing else to read. It made me hate the entire Forgotten Realms setting, so I've never got into Baldur's gate and other games in the setting, everything was soiled by the Drizzt shit.
