Any tradition that gives people some sort of meaning is better than current western neoliberalism. All the main character wanted is some young woman to love him (he didn't realize this under neoliberalism, he thought he wanted sex). With Islam, he and other academics get what they've truly wanted but were unable to actualize under secular rule.
