Hey /lit/ I'm intending to ease my way into non-fiction by only reading a small amount a day (30 pages or so) and I'm wanting to read a few of my larger paperbacks.

What should I read between chapters of Žižek's Violence:
>Catch 22
>The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles
>The Master and Margarita

A reason why would be dandy too.

Master and Margarita.

Because Marianne Faithfull gave a copy of it to Mick Jagger, and he read it in one sitting and then wrote "Sympathy for the Devil" in tribute to Bulgakov.

i heard catch 22 was funny and my english teacher tried to make me read it once

The Master and Margarita is probably the most difficult of the texts. Catch-22 is the most humorous. Murakami is neither difficult not funny.

I'd recommend against reading Bulgakov's book (though that's my favorite), and suggest you read Catch-22 as light reading between your non-fiction reading.

what if you're reading non-fiction in between fiction

How could have thought that a genius like Bulgakov could inspire such a bland, primitive and ephemeral display of guitar 'music'.

I really really enjoyed the Wind-up bird chronicles, and Catch 22. Master and Margarita is great too, but I think it is more a book that needs to be read on it's own.

I'd suggest reading Wind-up bird chronicles because I fell in love with it after reading... but Catch 22 is the more "literati" approved book. And I would probably say I could see why it'll be considered better by most, but that's not going to stop me liking Wind-up bird.

I guess what I'm saying is don't read Master and Margarita alongside anything else, and read either Catch 22 or Wind up bird.

Read Master & Margarita by itself, it'd be a shame to interrupt it. It's just something you get lost in, easy fantastical prose and all.

Okay I'll read Master and Margarita another time.
How does it compare to Heart of a Dog?

Grouping the Master and Margarita with the Wind-Up Bird Chronicles, Catch-22 would be the logical choice. Defy logic, and I agree that Bulgakov is a potent writer, but that if his prose were as memorable as the other respondents here attest, then that's merit to read the Master and Margarita while reading another book. I am in a situation where all my books have lost their sheen and I have several books half-read now to trek through to the end, whereas you could have two classics coursing through your neurons. For these reasons, I'd advise you take Bulgakov for your detour to Zizek.

>> No.1952613

don't read zizek.

its hipster nonesense. You remeber those dipshits in high school who thought "whoah fight club is deep!".

in college they start blathering about zizek, lacan, and derrida.
