Can it reasonably be argued that light novels are a form of literature? I'd dare to say they are better than 99.9% of all modern Western nihilistic garbage. At least they teach us to be more human and loving.

Well they are literature obviously, but that's because literature is a medium. Genre trash is also literature. Doesn't mean it's good.

Light novels are trash and that's why Japan's book industry is basically a funnybook industry, combined with the fact they can't write.

I've only ever read light novels of anime movies I've watched and enjoyed. Often, interesting new details will be explored, particularly if the LN is written by the writer/director of the movie itself.

They read like something my students would submit to me. They're in HS so they have an excuse. Maybe it's just the translation but fuck me these books need an extra editor.

I’m always blown away and floored when I meet adults who like anime/manga. It’s like admitting to me you want to fuck children. I see it the same way and I usually bluntly ask these people if they’re pedophiles. I ask the same question when adults tell me they read YA.

Of course, granted, most 'genre' fiction is crap, but that's only because most of everything is crap.

lets be honest here:
If the text had no association with anime, the writing was serviceable, not genre clad and the art style was something "other" like Mucha, then it could be judged without bais and would probably be well received here

They are one of the worst form of lit. They have little imagery so they can hardly provide the same level of visual pop as a manga and yet they offer just enough to fuck up your imagination. Most nips are also shit at writting(at least from a European perspective) and most translations are done by people who just -kinda- know Japanese so even if they are written well in terms of bare phrasing most of us will never know. The only genuenly good LN I read is Boogiepop.

I read the first volume of The Empty and Zeroth Maria because it was number one on some list and it turned out to be one of the worst things I've ever read. It was also my first and only light novel to date and it has led to me never want to give another one a go if this is the sort of thing touted as the best of the best.
Are there any that are actually good reading to someone who reads more than YA fiction?

Honestly weird that you would say this, I dropped Spice and Wolf around volume XIII because it kept getting more cringy and gaytheist. Everything after Lawrence abandons his dream of owning a shop for no reason and Cole joins the party is fucking gay.

As another anon pointed out they are not exactly high literature in the first place, and they become downright unreadable when they are translated by some dweeb who majored in Japanese in college.

I doubt it. Most weebs (like you) are anything but. Presumably because you have been reared on a mental diet of impossibly perfect human specimens who resolve everything through melodrama and faux-deep (but really nonsensical) conversations. No wonder normal humanity is intolerable to you
