It's been a while since I've seen this movie, but I think Almudena Grandes' Castillos de cartón (must be translated into English, not sure with what title tho) might be exactly what you're looking for.
I have to say though, I never understood why this is Rohmer's most popular film, it's the one I like the least of his. I might rewatch it soon.

It's the closest thing I could think of to Twin Peaks, though I admit it's not perfect.
Both focus on unusual characters trying to solve mysteries that seem routine at first but then veer into the supernatural. It's more overtly supernatural in TP, but there are still elements of it in the Maxwell's Demon sequence, the spiritual connection to Remedios Varo, the general paranoia, etc. in 49. Both are also so over-the-top in the depictions of their settings to be almost, but not quite, satire - TP has tons of bizarre soap opera shit going on (that are really the entire soul of the show) and Pynchon can't help himself from parodying 60s California culture on every page.
I also just associate the way Pynchon and Lynch view their own art, both of them willing to do zany shit and seeming not to care much about public perception of their work.
