19335671 No.19335671 [Reply] [Original]

I made several charts for French readers a while ago because I realised many people were reading translations in English and not in their mother tongues. But my medieval chart wasn't very good since I hadn't yet read many books. So here's a much improved chart.
Post charts, comment charts and please provide new contents because charts are a good way for beginners to discover new books.

The Philosophical Writings of Descartes is pretty much a one-stop shop, volumes 1-2 being main works and volume 3 being correspondence. There's also a shorter correspondence on the market if you can't find the 3rd volume.

Basically you just have to decide whether you want to read everything (like the Regulae and World fragments) before reading Discourse and Meditations. Most of his side stuff is in scientific and mathematical writings that are easily accessible.

I hated learning French more than any other language. To me it seemed to have 4x as many idiomatic constructions as German or Italian and I never learned these except through practice and immersion (in reading).

German sentences will have an un-analyzable idiom every other sentence, Italian will use one per sentence, but French sentences come out like this if you try to translate them literally
>It is not what that what it is that but from the point of to such a cat
and they somehow mean
>This sort of cat is well known

Thanks. I've read Discourse in French, Meditations in a bilingual edition and most of Passions of the soul. Was rereading Descartes again for college, read Regulae today and was wondering if there's anything else I should focus on. Side note: Is Cassirer's study on Descartes worth my time?

cassirer is always worth the time

burtt is also good

also read any sections on descartes in patterns of discovery and from the closed world to the infinite universe, it's worth reading his exchange with henry more (and more's critique of descartes is also interesting) but i forget which one of those it's in

also for a weird thing, toulmin's cosmopolis has what may be the first published piece (a piece of juvenilia) by descartes
