You have to experience the pig a bit before you name it, I think. Otherwise the name won't fit.

Many years ago I went on holiday to a cottage beside a farm. There was a large pig in a pen next to the garden, who was more-or-less a pet. She was called Ruby. But your pig might not turn out to be a Ruby. It might turn out to be a Sapphire. if it's a blue pig, like Gus's pigs in Lonesome Dove. Or it might be a Caddy, if it reminds you of a Faulkner heroine.

I once knew a girl who had a cat called Wesley Wellington. That's a fine name, but it wouldn't have been fine for a different cat. I have a stone pig which sits outside my front door. He's called Cholmondely (pronounced "Chumley"). But the same thing applies.

"Gerald" isn't a bad name, in my opinion.

The only general advice I would give is not to name it after a fictional pig (e.g. "Wilbur"). That would be like naming your child after a celebrity. Very bad. He wants his own name, not another pig's name.
