If you are reading multiple pages a minute, how are you retaining any information? Three hours of reading for me is maybe 100 pages.

me too, i often like to reread lines a lot as well which ends up making a page last for a minute or two

>> No.19124531

I do 18 pages per hour for deep reading. 50 pages for casual reading. I'm fairly slow at reading because I have dyslexia. Like, sometimes I misread "thought" as "though" ... I make these types of errors a lot, so I often have to reread the same passage twice. This didn't stop my from reading three books last week though ( Dracula, The Road, and Old Man and the Sea ). What's your excuse neurotypicals?

i do this a lot too, where i catch myself skimming rather than "reading." i ended up chalking it up to one's inclination to "skim" a lot more nowadays given the current entertainment atmosphere. when you're scrolling on social media, oftentimes--if you're like me-- you'll perhaps not even stop scrolling to read something, and will rather skim it just to get the general idea.

I do this too, I think is an issue with attention. I have developed some sort of ADD from playan too much vidya and lack of reading for 4 years straight.
When I was 5 I would read 20 pages every night, but I had to reread the last 3 pages the next night because I would start to fall sleep and mindlessly skim through each word with my eyes half closed, my mind turned off or almost dreaming, and the book slipping off my hands.

i found a weird balance with this now where if i actually care about a book i have no problem maintaining close attention for hundreds of pages but if it's not really my bag my mind just starts to wander so much i struggle to make any progress. i actually like it, i used to finish all the books i started out of a pointless sense of obligation but now i just stop after the first 50 pages if it's not working for me and look for something else. i'm not sure if it's internet-induced add or if this is what developing a taste feels like but the end result is positive.

dropping a book asap is the best thing i think. i can't remember reading a book where i didn't like the first few chapters and then changed my mind completely.

time can certainly change tastes though. a book you can't stand now may not be the same book in ten years.

Most people stop reading when they get bored or distracted, which is about 60 pages or so of serious literature. But its a scientific fact that this default quit point is only around 15% of the actual human capacity. Someone who's decided to really apply themselves to a goal and not quit can go way further.
