Comics are a different medium. They aren't literature, just like sculpture is not dance and architecture is not music.

Homeric works were thought of as real by their culture and then they became mythology and literature. Marvel stuff is known fiction from the start and is not mythology nor literature.

Marvel/DC are corporate entities who manufacture stories like Ford manufactures cars. The American equivalent to the old myths are things like Santa Claus, Paul Bunyan, John Henry, Daniel Webster, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln (some stories concern fictional people, some stories concern real people who rise to myth status). Comics aren't just for kids, at least nowadays. But they tend to be targeted towards an audience of male children/teenagers. Why does it appeal to this demographic? Because the stories tend to be simple and exciting. Younger people want stimulating stories and their tolerance for simplicity and repetition is much higher than that of (most) older people. Young readers will enjoy 100 issues of superman punching aliens/bad guys/monsters/black people but older people tend to enjoy things less exciting and more "mature".
