Although i love him and it pains me to say this, but he's nowhere near as good as Tolstoy at plotting his work. He's got an extremely good erudition though. Almost as good as the Count.

Vargas Llosa is the Latin American Flaubert, it was his greatest inspiration after all.
But to be consistent he was more close to be the Joyce of Latin America in the sense that he took advantage of the narrative innovations of previous great writers (Flaubert, Joyce, Faulkner) and implement or expand them.
