Well, I did not like the book because I thought that the main story was "meh", while the language was overly complicated. So you end up making a big effort to understand what is going on while the pay off isn't worth it. This is the main reason I disliked the book. By pretentious I mean that while I was reading I got the vibe that the author was trying to send me some "deep" message, but I never got any of that, the language used is to ambiguous and so the ideas that he was trying to push are just not clear enough to be judges as good or bad philosophically, so I only can call them pretentious or "cringe"(very adequate characterization of the "judge" character).

I want books that are less verbose and have better stories. Also, if a book is trying to sell me some philosophical idea, I want those ideas fully fleshed out and clear so I can judge them as good or bad.

The kid is meant to be a blank canvas, he doesn't have any relation to Ishmael except that he is subsumed by the narrative in the middle like Ishmael is in MD. The most explicit MD character in BM is the Judge, who is The Whale and Ahab both rolled into one and then some more.
Look Sneed, you can come back to it later again. I think the book is worth an effort to understand and I have seen people grow to love the book on rereads. You will understand some of what he was trying to convey on a reread, that is a given.

It is overly complicated. Why would I search words on a thesaurus just to describe the desert over and over and over? I got it the first 100 times, the desert is dry and has bones in it. I said it is overly complicated not because this amount of synonym use is inherent bad but because he uses it to describe the fucking scenery over and over, in a way that sounds unnecessary and makes things very boring(for me). Also, war != violence, you can have war without violence and violence without war, the judge also alludes to "the dance" in a way that seems more expansive than the usual definitions of the word "war" as some metaphysical struggle between wills and even says "war is God" at some point, what makes thing even more complicated.

I don't read translated, I prefer to read the books in their native languages.

Book of disquiet is good, I like Pessoa, his works in Portuguese are also very good.

The stranger is ok, most people will enjoy it more as kids tho, gives me edgy teenage vibes

All western philosophy. What? To late, already got my degree in this stuff lol.

You have to master the prose, say nothing at all, be obscurantist and suck up to the right people (like franzen and DFW did with NY intelligentsia), maintain a persona and you can be among the greatest literary minds of today.

>you can have war without violence and violence without war
no. swords and guns aren't the only kind of violence and warring is inherent to violence.
>metaphysical struggle between wills and even says "war is God" at some point, what makes thing even more complicated.
how is any of this complicated. this is highschool imsodeep philosophy. it reads like a 16 year olds manifesto.

It's a decent list. Obviously too much Dostoevsky and too Anglocentric
