She frowned and let out a sigh, hoping I would take pity on her after a long day of work at the factory and release her from her motherly duties. Besides, if given a life of leisure such as mine they would certainly squander it on frivolities. Everyone seems to have that point in time where they try to sell their pessimism as cleverness, and they stick to their pessimism because retreating from it one bit would mean striking a nick into their own cleverness. I'm a christian arab I do somewhat feel an identification with islam because "islam" is as deep and infused with middle eastern culture as something like catholicism is in Italy or Hinduism in India. It's beyond simply a a disconnected religion you practice. Christians took from pagan culture and Muslims took from chrsitian and pagan culture and Christians took from Muslims, ect. It becomes very similar over the centuries in cultural practices and aesthetics. It's the default "arab" religion and because of its central importance in arab identity you see yourself in it regardless of your actual belief in its religious doctrines. But that that depends on the arab. Levant muslims yes I feel a connection with but it feels more alien the further from here i go. So it's also geographic culture.
