The best Iago I have seen was (surprisingly enough) Richard Thomas in a production of Othello down in San Diego several years ago. No mustache twirling and no latent homosexual undertones that so many modern stagings rely on. Just pure, skilled malevolence and pettiness and caginess, simply but beautifully portrayed.

An interesting insight I read somewhere was that Iago is the anti-Falstaff. Falstaff says that he's not only witty, but brings out wittiness in others; Iago that he is not only malevolent, but brings out malevolence in others. A truly satanic archetype, yet still realistically crafted. Fuck I love Shakespeare.
