Vagabond. I've read a lot of manga and quite frankly, most of it is bad. That's not to say that there isn't a lot of it that isn't entertaining but there really isn't a lot of what I would consider groundbreaking stuff.

Vagabond is just absolutely fucking incredible. It's a semi-fictional retelling of Musashi Miyamoto's life, an undefeated master swordsman and philosopher but it's so much more. It's perfect, it's just completely perfect. The mangaka must have tapped into some otherworldly inspiration as I just can't fathom how he was able to produce something so masterful, the art is gorgeous, the story telling superb, the insight rich, and the philosophy phenomenal. Every single character is written to perfection, I honestly can't point out a single flaw in any of it. There is so much emotion and beauty in each individual dual and every single one is different, being able to portray concepts that is impossible for any other medium to portray. I don't know how the author was able to do what he did, it's really difficult to articulate, it's a work of art. I generally wouldn't consider manga to be on the same level as books, music and movies as a form of art, but I'd consider Vagabond to worthy of the same respect that the most highly acclaimed books, music and movies get. This manga single-handedly raised the collective worth of manga as a medium. I can't express enough how fucking good it is, go read this right now.

Just make sure you don't read a low quality translation. Do your research first

PunPun is tied with Vagabond as best manga for me, there isn't anything like it. It's the only thing that I'd actually give a trigger warning prior to anyone reading, that shit will cause chronic depression. Check out Boy's Abyss if you're still chasing that existential horror, op

I really enjoy Tatsuki Fujimoto's work, especially firepunch and chainsawman. Kafkaesque as fuck.

Golden Kamuy, Grand blue & Hinamatsuri are actually pretty fucking hilarious as far as Japanese humour goes, it generally always makes me cringe but these are definitely outliers.

Chi no Wadachi is an honourable mention if you want horror mommy milkers

I wish I'd never read punpun. I was 15-16 when I read it and it is still vivid in my memory. I think about it obsessively. My life turned out almost eerily similar to that of punpun's; I have an aiko of my own.

I guess there's some solace to be found in it as well, since I've never been so personally affected by a piece of media, and find comfort in knowing that someone understands what Kagoshima truly means.

What does /lit/ think of Kingdom?

I really like it. It's fun and some battles are very well built-up. I would say it lacks depth but at the same time it works really well for what it is.

The thing is, the various stories are hit or miss, but the ending trying to tie everything together really stuck with me, personally. Even if it is kind of wacky.

Lately, I’ve been thinking of foregoing writing exclusively to try my hand at drawing comics. I’ve been an artist for a long time and used to draw comics for university publications which always were praised but I never tried to take it anywhere for lack of interest in American comics. Manga like the ones listed here have renewed my interest in it. My personal favorite is Tokyo Ghoul.

Yes it's a direct prequel.
You cannot read Aria without reading Aqua. Honestly it's best to see it as just one manga.

Aqua on its own is not that special. But I think it's a good way to gage if it's your thing or not.
IMO the best way to read it is reading about 1-3 chapters a day. It's really not something you should binge. Aria is more about feelings and themes, not engaging storytelling or characters. Although its characters do get development.

IMO most people even underrate it. Most /a/fags just say it's about "appreciating the little things in life".
Which is true, but it is far more nuanced than that. With its ending it becomes so much more.
