Colonization was the worst mistake in human history. The Europeans already lived on the best continent, did they really need more?

This book doesn’t do what they think it does.

Just reading about the natives life and culture, you realize how terrible it was, arranged marriages, buying nobility titles for your undeserving children, having people pretend to be gods, good riddance!

Arranged marriages are unironically based. Marrying for love is a new invention.

I don’t think it was exclusively terrible. Achebe makes it sound very appealing at time even though he was critical of it.
What makes the book so great is that it is a really thoughtful and nuanced analysis of the situation rather than some sort of sappy, moralistic polemic.

Are we supposed to feel bad that the natives were saved and brought before the Lord? The white men came and turned them away from false gods to the one true God. This book should be thanking the missionaries for their work.

No one who reads it will seriously think that it's defending Okonkwo's tribe's way of life. They are barbaric; there's even a part where they throw newborn babies out to die because they're twins iirc. It was a nuanced criticism of their ways and the way they changed when the missionaries came.

the only thing i remember about this book was the grammatical errors and I couldn't tell if they intentional or the nigger who wrote it was just retarded. It was in the narration not the dialogue iirc

The only thing I remember is being assigned it in 3 different university courses and declining to read it every time. (Only to read it one afternoon and think--this is how white elites want me to frame black people).

While the book does deal with colonialism, the more essential idea was that of "new foreign ways"/"what is viewed externally as progress" destroying an established culture which ends up emasculating the former alpha males, promoting the dregs of society, and altering the zeitgeist of the common folk until it is so alien to the conservative people who participated in the old ways that they go absolute apeshit bc they cant cope

Its greater message is applicable to most societies. Okonkwo in many ways isnt any different from a trans-hating, maga boomer in America today.

I will concede that most midwit teachers will teach it as "what man bad" rhetoric which is fucking retarded. Obv the natives are not to be admired and the colonists arent really painted as being evil. The main focus is the degradation of culture and people not dealing with it well, which is a universal theme and the novels best point

>Marrying for love is a new invention.

Even in the days where most marriages were arranged, the goal in almost every case was that love would result. Ironically, in this regard the lower classes were freer than the upper classes, since lower-class women would be paired off in the hope that they would love their new husband, while the aristocracy would marry off its duchesses and princesses purely for political purposes.

One of the other overarching themes of the book is that Okonkwo is just kind of a stupid asshole. He literally kills a man in a fit of rage. He's clearly some insane berserker type who would be useful in a time of war, against an enemy he was well-positioned to fight. But he's useless in peacetime and he's useless against the missionaries and the colonizers because they're not the sort of enemy he's equipped to combat. The whole book, from Okonwko's perspective, is a massive fish out of water story. Okonwko seems to not spend a single moment of the book in a situation that he's actually adept at handling.

The white man's burden is a thankless task.
You will bring the savages of the world to the 21st century and then they will outbreed and destroy you with your own technology. Thus are the wages of service to the one true God.
