The general historical consensus is that the medieval masses worked fewer hours on average, even with an agricultural subsistence lifestyle.
This checks out compared to subsistence farmers in modern societies. Furthermore they really will only spend a few hours a day on farm work in the off-season and growing season, where the rest of their time is free or spent on odd jobs for supplemental income. Obviously planting and harvest seasons are extremely busy.
Industrial farmers in the West do not represent this lifestyle, btw.

I don't fall on either side of the medieval vs. modernity going on here, but I do have to say that with the vast improvements in production have not brought an improved work/life balance, at least here in the US.

Although modernity has led undoubtedly to increased life expectancy, that life is one of ever increasing retirement age today, and yet, one where most of life is dedicated towards working for another and not enjoying life's offerings.

On the other hand there is the shorter life expectancy of the peasant, but there's also how much time of dedication to work vs. for life that has to be considered. "A 13th-century laborer could have up to 25 weeks off per year."
