More brutal things have happened to weaker people, who recovered from it.

More brutal times have occurred to less advanced ages and peoples, who recovered from it.

In Greek mythos suffering was allowed to exist among humanity because it is through suffering that we can learn. Everything that makes our lives easier and happier was created because we have suffered without it in the past. Life is a harsh teacher that first gives the test and then gives the lesson. This is why there is not a more disgraced person than he who suffers without learning from it.

That is a waste of good suffering.

Now you can be like the Biblical Job in maintaining bravery in face of physical adversity, if you know the immaterial values encompassing life are eternal, or you can be the opposite, suffering very little, learning almost nothing, and despairing a whole lot.

Is there any genuinely good /lit/ from this chart and not just being edgy for the sake of edge? Only one I've read from this is blood meridian.

>> No.18497391

>>18497347
From these I've read

>120 Days of Sodom
Exactly like the film, transgressive political satire with edgy rape and cophrophilia for the sake of it

>A Season in Hell
It's great, not even "disturbing", but a very emotionally volatile and cathartic poem

>American Psycho
Like the movie but boring and meandering, for the sake of making and forcing the point of the main character's empty and vain lifestyle. The film was better but the novel can be beautifully schizo at times

>Blood Meridian
You already know

>Cows
Disgusting as fuck, very little in the way of message that really matters, but I don't regret reading it, as it was an interesting experience, kind of like Hogg, it s a desolate and depraved tale in a depraved world, a safari experience of observing that

>Hogg
It's actually kind of interesting, but too much rape, rape and murder, and fucking for the sake of it. It's 200 or so pages of raping and raping, but the characters that it paints are actually kind of interesting to observe, in a similar way as the above

>Naked Lunch
It's very good. Occasional disturbing sex, drug abuse and what not, but it paints a psychedelic interpretation of the downtrodden lifestyle homosexuals and junkies lived in a time where these lifestyles were much more maligned and not corporate and estate sponsored. It's fun, funny, satirical in clever ways and pretty good.

>Perfume
A very well-written novel about a serial killer in old-timey France, it is disturbing as a story about a killer tends to be, but not unnecessary or cheap as Hogg or Cows. It's very good.

>Story of the Eye
Edgy and sometimes disturbing erotic novel, sexy here and there, not too hard to stomach at all, very good for what it is going for, and I'm not even a fan of Bataille.

>The Obscene Bird of Night
Imagine a Borges novel that gets really into psychological horror territory and you get the general tone, it's pretty great.

>The Room
One stream of consciousness angry rant and revenge fantasy from an inmate. It's hit or miss, I like it but most wont.

>The Wasp Factory
All disturbing things about this one are a huge spoiler. It's pretty gross, meanders a lot, and is rather psychological but one of the ~disturbing~ novels I've read that I consider pretty good.

Crash is loads of fun. Have you ever wanked to people dying in car accidents? You will. The film is less creepy and more sexy. You'll wank earlier to car accidents.

Cities of the Red Night pisses all over Naked Lunch. Have you ever watch a transtime invasion by ejaculating paradrop of all kinds of sexy boys fighting fascism while fucking in mid air and copulating? Have you killed the scientific femocracy of fascism? The cities of the red night are six in number. Everything is real, everything is permitted. Nothing is permitted, nothing is real. Everything is mandatory, everything is as real as mandated. GET IT MAN-DATED. IN THE DATE. UP THE BUM.

Though honestly Crash is okay. The thing you REALLY need to read is JG Ballard's semi-auto-biography Empire of the Sun. Steven Spielberg totally fucked it up: he doesn't even try to sell the child for sex or human butchery in the film (pro-tip Chinese Cannibal Child Butchers reject sick meat). Also he doesn't ejaculate over the kamikaze boy's corpse during an atomic explosion in the movie.

For really disturbing literature try reading the Transcript of Nuremberg in full, particularly Soviet evidence. I stopped shaking six to eight months later.

You only need to know the basics of college algebra and a very thin idea of calculus. Single variable calculus should be enough.
Here is a reading order for you:
>Discrete Mathematics (Epp)
>Mathematical proofs (G. Chartrand)
>A Graphical Approach to Algebra & Trigonometry (J. Hornsby)
>Calculus (J. Steward)
>>18504263
Hello. Don't follow this chart. I don't know what your goals are, but here are some books every programmer should have read and studied:
>SICP (G. Sussman)
Yes. The meme book.
>Compilers (A. Aho)
Yes... This meme book. Before anyone complains, it's not so you can make your own compilter, it is so you understand what exactly a compiler does. Trust me. This is worth your time.
>K&R: C
You're almost done. You can now write better code than the majority of my peers that have graduated with A CS degree.
>Intro to Algorithms (T. Cormen)
Now you're able to write some very efficient programs. You're not a god, but you're going to look like one compared to people who are making $150K/yr. Trust me, this book isn't just "for professionals", learn to write code or don't bother. This field isn't supposed to be just cobbling shit together and making it run. (even if it is..)
TAOCP is a good reference bookset, but it is also incomplete. I don't think Knuth will live to put out Volume 7, sadly.
The pragmatic programmer is nice, but it's mostly about setting realistic expectations and general ideas of how to get things done. I'd recommend this for any professional, but it isn't required for general programming.
Concrete mathematics is something you should look into, Knuth will be really useful. But you can skip it.
You know what isn't on here?
>CODE (C. Petzold)
This could be useful to you, for quickly understanding CS ideas. It's a great starting point, too.
If you liked K&R's C, look into Hacker's Delight, which will show you a lot of concepts written in C that travel well into other languages.
Oh and honestly, don't bother with the rest of the chart.

Do you think the Grail and Hermetic Tradition are some of his elementary works? The whole picture is a meme. The guy that made it had no idea what he was doing and I don't understand why people keep posting it unless they also have no idea what they're doing. In the Mystery of the Grail, Evola is constantly referring the reader to Revolt and some of his other books so what sense does it make to read it first? It's the same deal with the Doctrine of Awakening and the Yoga of Power with East & West, and why would Eros be "optional" but the Metaphysics of War isn't? It's something that I've benefited a lot from and seems like a really rewarding way to help people, since you're helping them but also seeing their changes in real time I'd imagine. My main concerns would be how to test if one has the right skillset and if one has I guess the mental and emotional stamina to do that kind of work.

I'm finishing a degree in something else and will be applying for jobs soon, and who knows, maybe that'll turn out well, but ideally I'd like to do something where I see concrete and positive results from what I'm doing, which seems really hard to find in what I'm probably going to end up in (a subarea of CS).

>> No.18523379

>>18522523
That makes sense to me. Like anything else, counseling is a skill you build over time. All those mental and emotional stamina muscles get toned through practice. And a good program will get you working on that it early on in class. It's a great field if you like to learn, because you're required to do continuing education in order to stay licensed.

I'm interested to see if you don't find yourself seeing those concrete positive changes from CS. It seems like such a practical endeavor.

>> No.18523482

>>18523379
That's good info, thanks.

And in one sense for CS yes, something is always being built or improved. But typically the application is something that quite frankly doesn't need to exist. Some of this can be abated by which jobs you apply to, for that reason, but there's very little in the way of meaningful stuff, which is made more annoying with modern corporate culture where "WE STAND BEHIND OUR PRODUCT". Anyway you're right in that there are options, I complain too much.

>> No.18523951

>>18523482
There's an elephant in the room with going into professional counseling. Everybody who wants to be a counselor has probably dealt with some stuff and may still be. Don't let the fear of "oh, they know I'm just trying to fix myself" get in your way. It's like an inside joke - once you're in, you get to laugh too. We all know we have shit. And like I said, a good program will get you working on your own stuff in the process. My school required at least 8 of my own counseling sessions (by people outside the program).
