This is funny. I went to a pretty rough elementary school and was a sulky type who read obsessively. Got some notoriety/occasional ribbing for it but never bullied. I would read books under the desk in class and my teachers (who felt sorry for me bc they knew my dad was in iraq) would very conflictedly tell me to stop/pay attention to the class. Sometimes they’d have heartfelt one-on-ones about it w me but I’d always keep reading. Some of it was silly (bone, wimpy kid, harry potter) and some of it was kind of high-brow especially for my age (dickens, dumas, swift, defoe, twain, hg wells), but the oddest thing I did was read the entire 800 page history textbook in class once my teacher that year had given up despite history being removed entirely from the curriculum that year due to the recession. People remembered that a decade later although I didn’t really think much of it at the time. Just saw it as kino friar/conquistador stories. I was kind of tall and good at sports (hit 6 ft in middle school) so even though I was a total sperg some other kids would start imitating me and the teacher would have to put her foot down. There were really ghetto kids there bussed from downtown- one of them was this loud eddie murphy trading places motherfucker who wore the exact same ashy, tattered black pants and shirt every single day. He was funny but most of the non-hoodrat kids avoided him- but I didn’t care and slid him homework answers if he asked. Sometimes I’d try to explain the stuff to him first. It cracked everyone up when I pointed out he was wrong about something on the blacktop and he yelled “shut the fuck up white nigga!!” So I guess people were cool to me about it. Got into a fair amount of fights but that was unrelated to reading, more due to sperg behavior or short temper. It reached a peak when I read Catch-22 about 5 times in 6th grade and then tapered off some. Always read at least occasionally though.

I was mostly referring to the postwar period there. Of course the US hasn't really had intellectuals of any worldwide esteem over its entire history. None of the Founders are important political thinkers, imo. The Constitution mostly just formalized what the states were actually doing at the time, its "brilliance" is exaggerated as part of the American state cult. In the long run, anti-intellectualism in the US is likely due to the cult of the common man especially as exemplified by the Borderer immigrants whose spirit is embodied in American anti-intellectualism.

I can state plainly that in my entire secondary school life from ages 11 to 18 I did not see a single student reading a book in their spare time for fun. If a book was ever pulled out by a student it would have been a declaration of "I AM DIFFERENT" or even "I AM BETTER THAN YOU". So you would have absolutely been ridiculed.

That being said said I have just recalled the rules were a bit different for girls. If one of the quiet girls opened up a book that wouldn't have been a big deal, they would have been left alone. I don't recall it ever happening, probably due to how little anybody would care. I'm not entirely sure why it is different for them. Maybe something to do with expectations, because the quiet girls always had all their stationary, books, and were always good in class with high grades.

I wish it was normalised in my school because there's no question I would have begun reading earlier.

I’m in the Uk and went to school in a nice rural area. Reading was seen as uncool, but only because it meant you were probably lonely during breaks. Most people that I know read books and generally they’re pretty good aswell.

In my case I was reading some historical fiction novel in class when the language teacher arrived, looked at me with disgust and said sonething like “uhhg, mainstream literature...” and basically told me that I shouldn’t waste my time reading that shit. My parents broke up when I was young and my mom had to move into a house in the ghetto. I went to two different schools. One was over 90% black and the second was over 90% mexican.
I used to ditch every class every day because they were a joke. At the black school I was put into the "gifted" magnet classes and it was obscene how stupid everyone was.
I ditched class every day and hung out under the bleachers reading egm, comics, or scifi paperbacks.
Every period a different group of class skippers would hang out down there and they were mostly very nice to me. They did make fun of me initially but eventually were cool and we'd talk about playstation games. The first time I ever smoked weed was with some black guys under the bleachers. We got snuck up on by the school cops and had to run. We got caught and kicked out of school. That's how I ended up at mexican school.
Mexicans were worse and I got my ass kicked twice for literally no reason.

Anyway, black people made fun of me for reading but eventually were okay. I also regularly saw black people slap books out of people's hands and say YOU DON'T WANT THAT as a joke
