This happened to me when I was studying for final exams in high school. I wanted to go to college and my mother (my parents are poor) told me what do I need college for ? Why would I pursue higher education ? I disregarded what she said and I went on to college, getting on state-subsidized spots for 5 years (cause of good grades) + got paid study scholarship 2 years for having good grades, while holding a full time job. I wrote it in a meme format because we're on a imageboard, but the subject is serious. Probably there are examples of both genders doing this to their children, but since OP posted that letter from Schopy's mother I thought we would talk about mothers, not fathers. Why are some mother like this? I say this sincerely, because I can't understand why would you want your own kid to be a mediocre individual with no personality, with no will of his own. I can understand this, if your kid was literally psychopath murderer that you would rather have him be a normal cattle, but I can't understand why mothers do this when their children diverge in a positive way. In Schopenhauer's case, he was a brilliant mind, a genius, a man who certainly influenced Western thought. Then why would you want him to be an average midly-pleasant man? Why not cherish his gift and encourage him to rise of above the herd? I love my mum but I see some of this trait in her sometimes, and some of my friends have it really bad in theirs, but mums are sometimes very insistent that their sons don't essentially outgrow them to the point that they are irrelevant. As a result, they kind of want to keep their sons in a stasis.
