in his writings guenon keeps going on about how self-initiation is basically impossible, and that any proper metaphysical tradition has to have been handed down from initiate to initiate from all the way back to the golden age (in distant, DISTANT prehistory). he even says that reviving a dead doctrine is impossible exactly because there is no initiation to be passed down.
if he believes this, why did he convert to islam? the doctrines of islam all derive from revelations that muhammad had on his own (or well, received from an angel). as far as i can tell at no point in his life did the prophet get initiated by anyone.

Receiving a revelation from God (either directly or through an angel) basically is like being initiated by God, and then a new chain of initiation starts from there. Similarly in Hinduism the lines of typically initiation go back to some Vedic sage or tantrist who is held to have been given a revealed scriptures by Brahman, Shiva etc. Guenon also writes that Muhammad may have possibly been initiated by Nestorians I think.
