Metamorphosis is a great place to start as it has a high literary value-to-pagecount ratio. Ditto for Heart of Darkness, Of Mice and Men.

Start with royalroad.com - the superior form of literature. Furthermore, you must be well versed in the japanese "light novel" tradition, which should be seen as the apex of western mythological tradition (Homer, Ovid...)

The Hobbit
Yeah its a kids book but honestly that's probably where you need to start. You will liable require a certain amount of activity compared to exposition or thematic expatiation, which is exactly what children's books weigh more towards, considering their uncultivated ability and attention span. I am not insulting you. Crawl before you walk and you will be running sooner than if you began stumbling right away.

I bought a bookmark which told me about 50 books I had to read before I died. Slowly picking away at that list, pretty good reads.

I'd suggest starting with books that were talked about in school. They always have something about them that make them stand out. Catcher in the rye, catch22, brave new world...

Try:
Farenheit 451
Lord of the Flies
Works of HG Wells
Works of HP Lovecraft
Frankenstein
Crime and Punishment
1984
Brave New World

Then read the Greeks and the Bible.
You basically aren't a human being until you've read the Bible and the greeks.

These ones are more commonly discussed on this board, although some of them (Blood Meridian/As I Lay Dying/Crying of Lot 49) can be harder to read if you don't read much books due to their unique style: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/4chanlit/images/3/34/Lit_starter_kit.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/483?cb=20180427100852
